Liverpool are still riding high on the back of their 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United.

The Reds are hoping that the record win at Anfield is more indicative of their true form than the 5-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid the week before. What is certain is that Liverpool are back in the hunt for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are up to fifth and are just three points behind Tottenham, while they also have a game in hand on the team they are chasing down. It’s been a difficult season for Liverpool, but it looks like they could still salvage something.

The latest news from the club concerns more fallout from that win over United and words from Fenway Sports Group chief John W. Henry.

There has been a backlash against the Netherlands international in the aftermath of the defeat – and he has spoken out to explain what happened.

"Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one, it's worth it because you amazing United fans are important to me,” he said on social media on Tuesday evening. “So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.

"From the National team, I know that Virgil always touches that sign and I went to stop him touching it to try and wind him up before the game.”

Jordan Henderson insists that Liverpool can’t get too carried away with their thumping win over Manchester United.

Liverpool beat Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield after a shaky start to the season but failed to build on it, and Henderson is determined that the same thing won’t happen this time around.

“We have to use (the 7-0) in the right way,” Henderson said. “We can’t can’t get too confident or overconfident, for sure. It was a big day (in Liverpool’s history) and one that we’ve got to enjoy but, at the same time, it’s only another three points and we’ve still got plenty of football to go until the end of the season.

“We have to finish strongly. Hopefully, this gives everyone the confidence to keep building, keep working and keep going right until the end of the season and see where we can get to.”

He told the Liverpool Echo: “We continue building at Liverpool Football Club in a responsible manner. We’ve seen many football clubs (including LFC previously) go down unsustainable paths.

“We have and will continue to focus our attention on investing wisely in the transfer market and we remain incredibly proud of our squad.”
