Four arrested after three-month-old baby girl dies at remote Staffordshire woodland campsite
The Heartbreaking scene where a 3-month-old girl was allegedly murdered while camping with her family has been revealed, as tributes pour in for the tot.
Photographs show remnants of a burnt-out tent as four are arrested on suspicion of murder.
Emergency services were first called to Great Wyrley in Staffordshire at 8.45am on Saturday following reports of a child in cardiac arrest.
Midlands Air Ambulance rushed to the woodland but sadly the girl was pronounced dead.
Two men aged 42 and 18, and two women aged 30 and 20, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
They have all been bailed as cops investigate.
Now, touching tributes and bunches of flowers had been laid along with a cuddly toy rabbit for the girl.
One note read: “To our beautiful niece. I miss you. Never even heard your voice. I’ll look for you in the stars and rainbows babba. We love you always Auntie Liz and Uncle Mat”
Another read: “Baby Girl, I’ll look for the brightest star in the night sky. Nanna loves you for ever”
A third read: “Rest in eternal paradise baby girl. All our love, everyone at Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay Chi Chat community, Sarah + Lee.”
The makeshift campsite where the girl died was set up in a woodland clearing to the side of a fishing lake.
At the site there was evidence of a campfire and a lot of litter including children’s clothing, a toy car and the holdall for a two-man Halfords pop up tent.
Also left behind was the burnt remains of a tent, along with at least eight cans of lager and a small dog toy.
Four members of the baby girl’s family arrived earlier today to visit the site.
A woman, who said she was the baby’s grandmother, said: “The family joined their granddad for one night’s fishing.
“The big granddad tent has been there for about a week and they joined him for one night.”
The number of floral tributes for the baby girl who died on a family camping trip has more than doubled during the day.
It appeared that family members had cleared up some of the rubbish by shoving it into the holdall for the burnt tent.
The police cordon has now been taken down, with remains of a campfire and children’s toys seen on the grass.
Malcolm Ward, whose bungalow is on the nearest road to the tragedy, said: “This is not a campsite. It’s just a place for people to walk their dogs and fish.”
George Brown, 34, an engineer, walking through the nature reserve said: “I walk on this footpath every day and you never get people camping here.
“I’ve seen the rumours on local social media about people living in the woods but I’ve never seen it myself.
“I certainly wouldn’t be wanting to camp with a three month old baby. At this time of year the temperature really drops “
A worker from a local pub said: “People are really shocked by this. The nature reserve is beautiful and is our pride and joy.
“For something so tragic to happen there is terrible.”
Detective Inspector Josh Lee, from the child protection team, said: “I want to assure the local community that we are working around the clock to investigate the circumstances of this tragic incident, which has understandably caused concern.
“While we can confirm that all four people have been arrested on suspicion of murder, we are still working hard to obtain further evidence and we are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances of the death at this very early stage, which we are treating as an isolated incident.
“All four people were arrested at the scene of the incident and have been released on bail.
“While we fully understand that speculation into the nature of this incident is likely to take place, we’d ask people to follow this page for factual, accurate updates as our investigation unfolds and to avoid sharing unconfirmed and speculative claims online.”
