Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd reaction as Red Devils slammed after defeat vs rivals

Liverpool closed the gap on fourth-place Tottenham to just three points as they obliterated arch rivals Manchester United on a stunning afternoon at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez all hit a brace as the Reds battered United 7-0. Roberto Firmino also found the net for Jurgen Klopp's side as they put down a marker for the rest of the Premier League.

As for Erik ten Hag's side, it's a defeat that put a dent on their title hopes after Arsenal and Manchester City both secured victories in the race for the Premier League trophy on Saturday.

Reiss Nelson's 97th-minute winner for Arsenal gave them a 3-2 win over Bournemouth after falling two goals behind, while City had earlier beaten Newcastle 2-0 to keep within touching distance.

Wow. What a day in the Premier League as Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield.

Neville's Man Utd comment

Souness and Neville clash

Gary Neville and Graeme Souness were involved in a heated exchange following Manchester United's humbling 7-0 defeat at Liverpool.

The Red Devils were battered on Merseyside as Jurgen Klopp's side ran riot thanks a brace each from Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah, with Roberto Firmino adding the other.

It was a sensational performance from the Reds, but questions will no doubt be asked about United's display. Erik ten Hag cut a frustrated figure in his post-match interview, while Neville and Roy Keane were seething after the game on punditry duties for Sky Sports.

Souness also got involved in the discussion as he decided to revisit his pre-match prediction, where he claimed Liverpool would win comfortably. He added that Neville said off-air that Liverpool didn't even play well - something that caused a heated debate between the pair.

Keane makes Liverpool admission

Roy Keane reluctantly praised Liverpool and labelled them as "absolutely amazing" after Jurgen Klopp's side battered Manchester United 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.

He said: "I’ll go in hard on Manchester United, of course I will, but I also have to say that Liverpool were absolutely amazing. Their energy levels, their quality of play, decision-making, desire.

"We saw at the end of the game there they were still trying to get bodies in the box, still try to get more goals - Liverpool were back to their very, very best, like they have done over the last few years. Embarrassing day for United though."

Klopp unpumped after win

Jurgen Klopp's fists remained very much unpumped after Liverpool's remarkable 7-0 victory against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds boss applauded the Kop after his team's heroics at Anfield, but he refused to do his trademark three fist pumps. Klopp usually punches the sky in front of the Kop after big wins and it is unclear why he decided against doing so on this occasion.

Souness has last laugh

Graeme Souness laughed last and laughed loudest after his prediction for Liverpool to "put a marker down" against Manchester United came true in a big way.

Jurgen Klopp's side went in 1-0 up at the break, but ran riot in the second half to end up as 7-0 winners. The result puts them well and truly in the picture for a top four finish after European rivals Newcastle and Tottenham were both beaten on Saturday.

Souness, who played more than 350 times for Liverpool in the 1970s and 1980s, was supremely confident of three points despite the gap in the table between the two teams before the match. His fellow pundits were less convinced, but the former Scotland midfielder saw his belief justified by the Reds as three different players bagged braces..

Ten Hag on Liverpool defeat

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag slammed his team's "unprofessional" performance after they fell to a 7-0 defeat against Liverpool.

"I think we played a decent first half," Ten Hag told Match of the Day. "One mistake in organisation just before half-time.

"Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn't play as a team. It was unprofessional.

"Yes [I am angry]. Definitely. I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude."

Keane hammers Man Utd

Roy Keane has hammered Manchester United's senior players after their humiliation at the hands of Liverpool.

He said on Sky Sports: "I never thought United were back to their very best, they've had some good results, but they have been giving teams chances and they've been let them off the hook. The chances they gave up today, Liverpool didn't let them off the hook and punished them.

"That's where they deserve credit, they created opportunties, they were clinical, ruthless. They kept going, wanted more goals, but the senior players - I always look at them. The ones we give a big build-up to, the experienced ones, will be the ones who let the club down today."

Klopp furious with Liverpool fan

Jurgen Klopp was livid with a fan who invaded the pitch and slid into Andy Robertson as Liverpool celebrated their final goal against Manchester United.

The Reds roared to one of their greatest-ever victories on Sunday evening, hitting seven goals past their arch-rivals at a frenzied Anfield. Each of the starting front three of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez found the back of the net twice and Roberto Firmino added the final goal with seconds remaining.

It was a truly embarrassing defensive display by the Red Devils, many of whom lost all composure as a second half during which they conceded six goals wore on. As for Liverpool, it was one of the most famous results in the club's history - and one over-exuberant fan took things too far after Firmino's goal.

5 talking points - Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd

Liverpool reminded Manchester United they can still be a match for any Premier League team on their day, putting Erik ten Hag's side to the sword with Cody Gakpo playing a starring role in a sensational 7-0 win.

Gakpo put the Reds in front moments before half-time, cutting in from the left and curling into the far corner of David de Gea's net. United needed a response at the start of the second period, but instead it was the hosts who struck quickly as Darwin Nunez scored a scrappy second.

Just as the visitors prepared to mount a comeback, it was three as Gakpo's deft finish rounded off a fluid counter-attack. It was already a hammering, but further goals from Mohamed Salah - twice - and Nunez put the cherry on top of the cake before Roberto Firmino added a seventh.

Premier League set for 100-minute matches

The Premier League is set to extend the amount of time added on at the end of matches after a successful approach from FIFA at the World Cup in Qatar.

43 of the 62 games at the tournament reached 100 minutes, with England's opening game against Iran setting the benchmark by lasting a mammoth 117 minutes. The contributors to added time were injuries, VAR decisions, substitutions, penalties and red cards, as well any time-wasting antics by the players.

The latter is particularly prevalent in the Premier League right now, with a number of teams deciding to run the clock down and taking longer than expected for goal kicks, set plays and throw ins. This tends to be the case when a side are ahead or hoping to protect a precious point.

Jesus decision

Gabriel Jesus was involved in Arsenal's warm-down following their win on Saturday as he closes in on a first-team return.

The Brazilian hasn't played for the Gunners since before the World Cup and has been a major miss, but Mikel Arteta declared the forward was "not far" earlier this week. Jesus, 25, gave the biggest indication yet that he will soon be match ready by involving himself in the post-match activities.

Small-sided games took place on the Emirates pitch following the dramatic 3-2 win over Bournemouth, with Jesus taking part. The summer signing, acquired from Manchester City, was a crucial part of the Gunners' impressive early-season form, although the team have been able to cope in his absence.

Keane praises Rashford revival

Roy Keane has praised Marcus Rashford for becoming the "main man" in the Manchester United side this season following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 25-year-old, who scored just five times during the 2021/22 campaign, has been revived under Erik ten Hag, having struck 25 goals in 39 matches in all competitions. He is also the third-highest scorer in the Premier League (14), with only Harry Kane (18) and Erling Haaland (27) netting more.

With Ronaldo leaving in November and Anthony Martial struggling with injuries, Rashford has had to step up and be the Red Devils' leading source for goals. He has done just that and is relishing being United's talisman at the top end of the pitch.

Big team news at Anfield

So the key notes from those two teams are that Man Utd are at full strength, barring long-term absentee Christian Eriksen. Raphael Varane starts alongside Lisandro Martinez, with Diogo Dalot preferred to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.

For Liverpool, Stefan Bajtetic starts from the bench with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott all in midfield.

Souness questions Casemiro role at Man Utd

Graeme Souness has doubled down on his critique of Manchester United star midfielder Casemiro as being a "steady Eddie".

Casemiro joined United in a £70million deal in August as he ended a trophy-laden nine years at Real Madrid – where he won five Champions League crowns at the base of a midfield alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. The trio formed a formidable partnership that largely dominated Europe.

United’s signing of Casemiro has proven inspired with the Brazilian starring for United this campaign - adding balance, control, leadership and structure to a team that desperately needed such attributes, and is a contender for the Premier League Player of the Season award.
