Lilian Thuram has claimed "every player has the dream of playing for Barcelona" when asked about the future of his son Marcus Thuram.

Marcus is out of contract at Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the season and a contract renewal at the German club does not appear likely. The remaining week of the January transfer window is the final opportunity for the Bundesliga outfit to cash in on the France international.

The 25-year-old, who was part of the France World Cup squad and featured heavily in the final, is set to be in high demand this year. The wide forward has been linked with a move to Manchester United on multiple occasions this month.

Italian outlet La Republicca claimed that Erik ten Hag was keen to add the Frenchman to his attacking ranks and that, coupled with Thuram's desire to play in the Premier League, could be enough to seal a deal either in January or as a free agent this summer.

A report from Telefoot in France also linked United with a switch and added that the forward has his heart set on leaving Borussia Park after four seasons in Germany. Inter, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with a move for Thuram.

His father Lilian is one of the most famous defenders to have played football, having accumulated 142 international caps for France and starred over two decades for Monaco, Parma, Juventus and, for the final two seasons of his career, at Barcelona. He has hinted his son may follow in his footsteps by playing for the Catalan club.

Lilian explained at the presentation of his book El Pensamiento Blanco on Wednesday when asked if his son could join Barcelona: "Every player has the dream of playing for Barca, that's a reality. But I don't know if there is interest or a contract. The important thing for Marcus is that he continues to improve to be better."

Marcus started his career with stints at French clubs Sochaux and Guingamp before joining Gladbach in 2019, scoring 41 goals across 119 appearances in the four seasons since. He is now set to move on this summer and he is in high demand.

Thuram made his senior international debut for France in 2020 and was part of their squads at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, finishing as runner-up at the latter. He assisted Kylian Mbappé's equaliser to make it 2–2 at the end of regulation time in the showpiece event.
