Microsoft has confirmed that it's beavering away to fix problems affecting a number of its online services this morning.

Update: Following reports of outages this morning that seemed to be getting cleared up, the Xbox server status has just been updated, while Xbox socials have now acknowledged the ongoing issue. The Xbox Status UK page is now showing a "major outage" with issues covering:

  • Account and profile
  • Store and subscriptions
  • Friends and social activity
  • Multiplayer gaming

Although I wouldn't panic; the official Xbox Support Twitter account has tweeted that it's "aware that multiple Xbox services experienced intermittent issues" but goes on to say that "all services should be recovered at this time." So hang in there if you're still bumping up against server outages as it looks like they're being dealt with and should be up and running in no time.

Original story: Reports of outages at Xbox Live, Outlook, and Teams have been coming in droves, although not all users are being impacted, which is something at least. Looking at Xbox Live on Down Detector shows a huge spike which reared up at around 7am GMT / 2am ET – that would've been around 11pm PT on Tuesday, January 24.

It's subsiding somewhat but people are still flocking to the site to report downed servers, and are voicing concerns that Microsoft has been hacked. Sony has been on the receiving end of this a number of times, with the most recent incident coming at the end of last year, and affecting FIFA 23 players.

While the outage seems to sporadic, and far from all-encompassing – Mirror Gaming editor Nathan Bliss managed to access Xbox Live at the time of writing without any hiccups – Microsoft has acknowledged that something is afoot.

The MIcrosoft 365 Status Twitter account tweeted that the company is "investigating issues impacting multiple Microsoft 365 services," and has subsequently "identified a potential networking issue". The latest update says that it has "isolated the problem to networking configuration issues". Currently, it's figuring out the best way to approach it "without causing additional impact."

Down and out

Over on Twitter, if you search 'Xbox Live down', you can see the extent of the regions that are reporting outages. Reports are coming in from Australia, from Spain, from Germany, as well as the US, and UK. It seems to the case that everyone's on the receiving end of whatever's taken the servers offline. As mentioned above, some people (lucky so-and-sos) can still log in just fine. They seem to be the outliers though; or perhaps their bubble of unaffected bliss is about to get burst.

Problems included being unable to download games from the Xbox library, being unable to play online, and not being able to log in.

The Xbox Support Twitter account has yet to acknowledge any issues with the servers, and the @MSFT365Status is the only account offering updates at this time. The latest update is a positive one however. The account has just tweeted that its "rolled back a network change" that it has identified as the possible culprit. It adds, "we're monitoring the service as the rollback takes effect."

If you've not been affected by the Xbox Live, Teams, and Outlook outage, then you may be just fine. If you've been tearing your hair out looking at a blank screen, salvation sounds like it may be on hand and soon.

We'll keep you updated if things take a turn for the worse again, but it looks like we're out of the woods.
