Terrified residents were evacuated from their homes after a gas explosion which saw a fire tear through a property.

Emergency services scrambled to a house in Goole, East Yorkshire, which exploded and caught on fire from the blast during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The tragic incident left a large gaping hole in the terraced property and bricks tumbling down from the roof, hitting parked cars.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson .

Residents were woken up by the sirens as flames billowed from the roof of their neighbour's home.

"It's terrible. It was a gas explosion, it happened around 1am," Nicolescu Sorin told Yorkshire Live.

"Pieces of the house wall fell over the cars and across the street, including power lines or tv cable.

"It's the first time I've seen something like this."

Police were called to the street at around 1.10am where residents were evacuated between 1am and 9am.

The house reportedly exploded following a gas leak.

Officers confirmed the road was closed in both directions and remains shut while an investigation take place.

"Their involvement in our safety is commendable, not being English citizens, the neighbours welcomed us into their homes," Nicola added.

"It was a cold night and a lesson from which I learned.

"Everyone be careful. From 1 am to 9 am we were evacuated - a terrible experience so please take care of you and your homes."

The cause of the explosion and the fire has not yet been confirmed.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "We are in attendance at the scene of a suspected gas explosion at a house on Malborough Road in Goole.

"We were called at 1.10am today to reports of an explosion and fire at the address.

"The area was cordoned off to allow emergency services to work safely and for the safety of the public.

"No one is reported to have been seriously injured.

"A man has been arrested at the scene on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life.

"He has been taken into police custody. Neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution.

"Occupants of all neighbouring properties have been accounted for.

"A road closure and police cordon remain in place, and we are asking for people to stay away from the area whilst emergency services deal with the incident.
