An explosives team has been trying to detonate a suspected WWII bomb on a beach after it was discovered in a nearby garden.

The bomb squad sealed off a street in Grimsby on Sunday morning following the shocking discovery, which is suspected to be from the Second World War.

The unexploded bomb was found in one of the residents' gardens, police said, with neighbours evacuated as teams moved in to safely dispose of it.

Officers have since tried to detonate the bomb in a controlled explosion on Cleethorpes Beach, but witnesses at the scene said it failed to go off.

Coastguards at the Lincolnshire beach meanwhile issued a stern warning to the public after the controlled explosion attempt was halted by paragliders.

People were urged to stay at least 200m away after one glider got too close to the detonation area.

"Due to the dangerous actions of some individuals with motorised kites, the bomb squad has requested that nobody goes in the 200 meter exclusion zone," a spokesperson for HM Coastguard said in a statement.

"This could cause extreme danger to the personnel due to potential firing of the equipment - due to radio equipment."

"This is not to be taken lightly - it is a serious offence. Please do not do it again."

Humberside Police, meanwhile, confirmed a suspected explosive was found and had since been safely removed from the owner's garden.

"Officers were called to attend Evenlyn Grove North, Grimsby at 10.50am today following the discovery of what is believed to be unexploded bomb in a garden," a spokesperson for the force said on Sunday afternoon.

"Colleagues from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to assess the situation and a precaution 100m cordon was put in place as a precaution.

"The EOD have now safely removed the unexploded bomb from the area and the cordon has been lifted."

The Humberside region has seen multiple unexploded remnants from WWII discovered in recent years after it was heavily targeted by the Nazis during the Blitz due to being a major port.
