Terrifying moment as Storm Lilian’s 70 mph winds nearly blow lorry off 100 ft high bridge

A lorry has been filmed as it went agonisingly close to toppling over as it balanced on two wheels during ferocious gusts on the Humber Bridge during Storm Lilian

Footage shows a lorry almost topple over as it balanced on two wheels while crossing the Humber Bridge as gales with gusts of more than 70mph hit the country.

Daniel Garner and his work pals were driving over the iconic 100 feet high bridge in East Yorkshire at around 7.30am yesterday morning when they looked on in alarm as the high-sided vehicle struggled with the strong gusts.

The 41-year-old’s caught on video how the HGV almost toppled over as Storm Lilian’s crosswinds push its right two wheels into the air and at one point it looked like it would not be able to regain its balance with a potentially disastrous outcome.

The lorry comes agonisingly close to tipping over as it travelled across the bridge over the River Humber on two occasions - with its left side appearing to lean precariously over the barriers. Daniel shared the video to Facebook where its been viewed more than 230,000 times and shocker users branded it "scary".

The tarmacer says he was "worried" for the lorry and hasn’t seen anything like it before. Humber Bridge’s official Twitter account announced they were closed to ’high-sided and wind vulnerable vehicles’ at 7.34am and a speed limit of 20mph was imposed.

Daniel, from Hull, East Yorkshire, said: "I was worried it was going to go over the side. We could tell as we were coming up the bridge how bad it was and we’d seen the wind was at 30mph but within a few minutes it was 60mph. I saw the lorry tip a little bit so I got my phone out and then it nearly went over a couple of times.

"If he’d have slowed down I would have got out and helped him but he carried on and got to the other side. I posted the video to advise people not to go over because I’ve never seen anything like it. I couldn’t stop watching the video." Daniel’s video has been shared more than 750 times. One commented: "Wow that’s scary." Another said: "Wow." Daniel replied: "Crazy mate. Nearly went." A third said: "Oh ffs. I’m going over that bridge today."

Some parts of the UK could see between 50mm and 70mm of rain today, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for much of the south east of England. The warning, which came into force at 6am and lasts until 1pm, stretches from Portsmouth, Hampshire, up to Ipswich in Suffolk as the country continues to battle Storm Lilian.
