Police investigating a riot outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham have issued a number photographs of people they would like to speak to.

The unrest was sparked as people began rioting around the country in response to the death of three girls at a Taylor Swift holiday club in Stockport. Protestors gathered outside the Holiday Inn Express hotel at Manvers in Rotherham on Sunday, August 4, but it soon turned violent.

The hotel was stormed with those inside fearing for their lives as police officers were attacked and injured outside. South Yorkshire Police are now asking for the public to identify people they would lie to speak to in connection with the mass disorder.

Fast-track court hearings have allowed prosecutors to put dozens of people behind bars within days of the violent protests, which flared up in towns and cities around England after the Southport stabbings. Some of the rioters have been jailed within just 72 hours of committing their crimes. Of the 51 sentenced to time in custody so far, 49 are men and only two are women.

The average age of the rioters jailed to date is 34 with a 51 year age gap between the youngest to be locked up (aged 18) and the eldest rioter to be sent down - William Morgan in Liverpool - who is 69 years old.

Six people have been jailed in connection with the first riot in Southport which erupted after a vigil on July 30 for three girls - Elsie Stancombe, aged 7, Bebe King, 6, and 9-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar - who were stabbed to death in the town the previous day. The riots spread around the country in the following days when false rumours about the man arrested for the Southport stabbings were shared on online platforms including X/ Twitter, which were then amplified by far right groups and anti-immigration campaigners. Cars and businesses were set on fire, immigration centres and mosques targeted and police officers injured as the protests turned violent.
