It's been a challenging week for the Prince and Princess of Wales to say the least, since the photograph they released for Mother's Day was quickly withdrawn by news agencies on the grounds of suspected "manipulation" and chaos ensued.

From jokes made by the King of the Netherlands, barbed comments from the White House, and one of the news agencies comparing the Royal Family to North Korea and saying they are no longer a "trusted source" - it's hard to imagine how much worse the release of a family photo could have gone.

A royal expert has praised Prince William, however, for "putting on a brave face" and continuing with his official engagements as planned amid the criticism, but claimed that William likely only has one wish in the face of it all.

The expert, Jennie Bond, told OK! that William has had to put on "a brave face" despite the huge amount of scrutiny he and his wife are under as she recovers privately from abdominal surgery that she underwent in January.

Not due to return to public duties until after Easter, Kate's absence has put a strain on the royals, with King Charles also away from "public facing duties" for the time being as he undergoes regular treatment for cancer.

While the King is said to still be continuing with his paperwork and other duties behind closed doors, the scandal caused over the Mother's Day photo could not have come at a trickier time.

Camilla and William both led the Royal Family at the recent Commonwealth Day Service and while the monarch was absent, he still released a video message marking the day.

Bond explained that at the service, "there is now a real warmth and affection between Camilla and William - both putting on a brave face to the world and getting on with their jobs".

However, the expert believes that William may have one wish amongst all the difficulties - to be at home with his children spending time together as a family.

"I am sure they would rather be at home tending to their partners and/or children," said Bond. The expert also noted that "Recent events have obviously brought William and Camilla much closer. They have been left, almost literally, nursing the Crown while the King and the Princess recover. Their teams will be working more closely to coordinate diaries and cover the engagements that has been planned, and Camilla and William are bound to have been in much closer regular contact."
