Meghan Markle has made a surprise Instagram comeback to reveal of her glossy new brand, American Rivera Orchard.

The Duchess of Sussex made the announcement on the company's new social media account, exactly four years to the day since she and Prince Harry took their "freedom flight" to the US, leaving life as working royals behind.

The launch comes alongside trademarks recently filed for a variety of products including tea services, cookbooks, table linens, jams and jellies, nut butters, and tableware. While not much is yet known about the new brand, this indicates Meghan may be planning on selling physical products.

The new social media account already boasts over 300,000 followers, but this isn't Meghan's first rodeo when it comes to Instagram stardom. We look back at the former actress' complex relationship with the platform - where she first met Prince Harry.

Meghan had an online public profile of her own long before she became a royal, thanks to her stint on the hit TV show Suits. Before she even met Harry she reportedly had three million followers on her personal Instagram account and a successful lifestyle blog called The Tig, which covered topics from travel to wellness. However, when she got engaged, Meghan had to shut both of these outlets down.

The social media network also played a major role in Meghan and Harry's romance - as it was the place the couple first laid eyes on one another. Harry described the moment he first saw his future wife on a mutual friend's Instagram in his memoir Spare when he spotted Meghan and his friend Violet playing around with a dog ear filter.

"Despite the canine cartoon overlay, I sat up straighter. This woman with Violet...my God. I watched the video several times, then forced myself to put down the phone. Then picked it up again, watched the video again."

The Duke went on to describe that despite how many people he had met over the course of his royal duties, "only a handful ever made me look twice," but when he saw Meghan he realised he had "never seen anyone so beautiful." His reaction wasn't purely based on her looks, he explained, with Harry writing, "There was an energy about her, a wild joy and playfulness".

Their mutual friend put them in touch, and the pair started exchanging messages before they finally went on their first date at Soho House - they quickly fell for each other, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Meghan may have closed down her personal Instagram account, but the couple still had great success using their official Sussex Royal account - where they shared their philanthropic work and news from their royal duties.

The account - which hasn't been used since the Sussexes decided to leave the UK back in 2020 - still has over 9 million followers. However, back in 2019, the couple was criticised by a royal commentator - Melanie Bromley - for typos and spelling mistakes that sometimes occurred in the captions of their posts, which left the commentator "cringing".

"They keep making mistakes on their Instagram. There is a website that points them out every single time they post," said the expert. The captions also on at least one occasion used American terms rather than British ones, leaving eagle-eyed royal fans wondering if Meghan herself was the one running the account.

But in 2020, the Sussexes broke the internet when they posted on their account with the shocking news they intended to leave life as senior royals behind.

Initially, the couple did not plan to fully leave the Royal Family, instead hoping to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution" and split their time equally "between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."

The couple said: "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter".

However, the plan to be 'half-in, half-out' royals was quickly squashed at the Sandringham Summit, and a full break was arranged to go ahead, with Prince Harry alleging in his memoir that royal aides had never prepared for the option that he and Meghan would be allowed to remain at least partially in the institution.
