'What a shame William and Harry couldn't put feud aside to honour mum together'

There was a time when William and Harry wouldn’t have thought twice about dropping everything to come together to honour their late mother’s legacy.

Standing shoulder to shoulder to talk about the impact of her work and their shared desire to dedicate themselves to raising up often unheard sections of society was second nature.

Now it seems they can not only bear to be in the same room as each other, sharing a platform on a night as prestigious as the 25th anniversary of the awards established in her name is even beyond them.

At its very core, the disintegration of their once inseparable bond is as tragic as it is deep.

Such is the fractiousness of their relationship that neither brother sought to see each other or even speak during Harry’s whistle stop visit to see the King after the announcement of his cancer diagnosis, although I am told given half a chance Harry would have welcomed a meeting.

But for William, there is as much distrust as there is pain over Harry’s continued and hurtful attacks on the royal family and the institution to which he is embedded for life.

What a shame then that they couldn’t, for a night at least, put their differences aside to honour the next generation of impressive young people whose endeavours embodied the very nature of Princess Diana’s work.
