The formerly Xbox and PC exclusive, Sea of Thieves is coming to PS5 later this year on April 30, 2024. But players on PS4 are wondering if they'll be able join in the swashbuckling.

Sea of Thieves is one of the four Xbox games currently announced to be going multiplatform, and will be the last of the four to make its debut on PlayStation; Pentiment debuted last month; Hi-Fi Rush is coming next Tuesday, March 19; Grounded coming just under a month later on April 16, 2024; and finally, Sea of Thieves on April 30, 2024. While Pentiment and Grounded are heading to the PS4 (and Nintendo Switch ), Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are currently only announced to be coming to PS5. Considering the game originally launched on Xbox One, many players are wondering: Is a Sea of Thieves PS4 release coming?

Sea of Thieves has come a long way since its rocky launch, with Rare continuing to upgrade the game over the years, and it's now in a pretty good place as a solid multiplayer game. Plus its success has led to Rare collaborating with some of the most popular piracy series for some in-depth story-based expansions, like the Pirates of the Caribbean Tall Tales in 2021, and the far superior franchise – The Secret of Monkey Island – getting a collab in 2023.

Is a Sea of Thieves PS4 release coming?

Sadly, it doesn't look like Sea of Thieves is coming to PS4. While the game did originally launch on Xbox One, and can no doubt run on the PS4 and PS4 Pro due to that fact, Microsoft has only announced a PS5 version of the game at the moment. And while a Sea of Thieves PS4 version could be announced later down the line, it still seems unlikely to us, considering the console is over 10 years old at this point, and Microsoft may not think the costs of porting it to an extra console is worth it due to that.

That being said, never say never. While it's not the only one of the four multiplatform Xbox games that's skipping the PS4, the other – Hi-Fi Rush – didn't appear on Xbox One, meanwhile Pentiment and Grounded (both of which released long after Sea of Thieves) are and will be available for PS4 players.

Perhaps if the PS5 version does well and there's enough outcry from players on last-gen consoles, Microsoft will relent and release Sea of Thieves om PS4 after all.
