Whoopi Goldberg has fiercely defended the Princess of Wales after the royal found herself surrounded by controversy.

Princess Kate was forced to speak out after an edited family photograph grabbed headlines around the world. Kate admitted to making changes to the picture, which showed her smiling alongside her three children, after fans pointed out several "errors" with the snap.

The Princess of Wales apologised for any "confusion" caused after the world's biggest photo agencies deleted the picture from their libraries. Sister Act star Whoopi has hit out at the scandal and said everyone is guilty of editing their pictures.

Speaking to her fellow panellists on The View, she said: "I'm sorry, I know very few people who don't manipulate their own photographs. All you've got to do is swipe, none of those people look like they're supposed to look. She's doing the same thing."

Panellist Sunni Hostin hit back and said as the "future queen", Kate would not be "taking selfies with her family." But Whoopi wasn't having any of it.

"I have to tell you, she may be the future queen, she's still an amateur photographer. That’s what they do. I'm sure none of you have ever tampered with your own. It doesn’t change the fact that she said, 'Listen, I manipulated the pictures, I'm sorry'," the actress said.

Whoopi also joked that everyone would be "in jail for the rest of our lives" if editing pictures was a crime. Her comments come after Kate released a statement apologising for the "photogate" drama.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, she said: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C."

The picture, which was released on Mother's Day, was the first official image of the Princess of Wales since she underwent abdominal surgery in January. Fans have been speculating about Kate's health, with Kensington Palace releasing the following statement in response: "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the princess's recovery timetable and we'd only be sharing big updates. That advice still counts." However, they did assure us that Kate is doing "well".
