Savvy bread storage hack will keep it fresh for days without any mould

Bread is a kitchen staple for many, but when it comes to how long it lasts, it can often go off quickly, meaning a lot of the loaf will just go to waste.

Thankfully, your bread doesn't have to go in the bin any more, however, as consumer expert Alice Beer has shared how you can help your loaves to last a whole lot longer - without a single speck of mould appearing on them. In an episode of ITV's 'This Morning', Alice Beer quizzed the hosts about where they'd store their bread at home, and she was shocked when they both said bread bins.

Alice shared: "Which? did a survey and said the traditional metal bread bin is the worst place to keep your bread, for keeping it fresh", reports The Express. Instead, cloth and plastic wrap are much better ways to store bread to keep it edible for a longer period of time.

Which? Science team leader Steph Kipling explained that a four-day bread storage experiment proved this point. According to her research, after four days, loaves kept in the cotton bag and plastic bag were still edible, if a little dry, whereas some of the others were "brick-like and inedible", including those stored in a plastic and metal bread bin.

And if you store it in the fridge, you might want to stop, as Alice explained if bread is put in the fridge, "it will crystallise the starch molecule." She concluded that: "The best place to keep it is in a cloth bag [outside the fridge and not in a bread bin], better than a plastic bag, that will keep it fresher for longer."

When it comes to the butter for your bread, Alice said: "At room temperature, you can keep it for quite a long time, up to two weeks, or otherwise, keep it in the fridge."
