Instagram users gobsmacked after discovering 'hidden emoji game' in app

If you need another excuse for wasting time on social media, you're in luck as there is a secret game on Instagram that uses your favorite emojis. Don't worry if you haven't heard about it yet - loads of people are just finding out about it too.

It's hidden inside the direct messaging part of the Instagram app for smartphones. Here's how you play: First, open up a message and reply with a single emoji to anyone, or get someone else to send you one first. Then, press and hold this emoji until it opens the game. The goal is like Pong where you keep the emoji from falling off the screen by moving a platform with your finger for the emoji to bounce on.

The longer you keep the emoji bouncing, the more points you get and it will change the backdrop as well. Every 10 points, your emoji even changes into a new surprise one. A caterpillar might become a butterfly, or a potato could turn into french fries.

Your high score stays saved no matter where you start playing too. A spokesperson for Instagram shared to TechCrunch that they're always looking for ways to make the app "feel more fun".
