One mum has shared how she has managed to save over £115 a year by making a simple change to her shopping.

The cost of living has really hit families and households hard over the last year, and everyone is looking for ways they can cut costs.

Gemma Bird, 40, based in Billericay, Essex, often shares her money-saving hacks on her Instagram page, @Moneymumofficial where she has amassed over 328,000 followers.

Last week, the Money Saving Mum shared the simple shopping hack on her page saying that the hack didn't save "loads of cash" but it could "really add up" in the long run.

Gemma's reel showed her looking at toiletries in the supermarket where she then showed hand soap products highlighting the already bottled products and then the refill packs.

She said: "This super easy hack is going to save you money. This hand wash is 48p per 100ml because the bottle already has a pump in it.

“This same hand wash [in a refill bag] is 38p per 100ml, 10p cheaper.

"Why pay for a pump you don’t need? Or body wash it’s the same thing just in a different pot."

“And you can always pour it into a fancy bottle if you wish!"

Gemma then showed a bottle of Sanex shower gel which was priced at £6.67 per litre, she then showed the refill product which was priced at £4.50 a litre.

She added: "Body wash is £6.67 per litre, but this one [refill bag] is £4.50 per litre.

“That’s a saving of £2.27 on two items.

“Switch to refills where you can - two items a week based on this example is a saving of £118.04 per year.”

In the caption of her Instagram reel, she asked her followers whether they had been making these switches and nearly 100 flocked to thank her for the tip.

One commenter said: "Such a simple idea but a good idea!"

A third added: "Always check the price per litre as sometimes you think you are getting a great deal - when you really aren't!"

Other Instagram users told Gemma she could go even further and save more money by switching to solid soap rather than liquid.

One commenter told Gemma her tip was "great" but solid bars were "even cheaper" and contained a "lot less packaging".

Another said: "Use bar soap, I switched to this during the pandemic and love it.

"Another tip is if you get loads of shower gels for Christmas but never use them, decant them into a pump and use them as hand soap.

"Love your posts!"

Gemma responded to these comments telling her followers that she loved their savvy hints and tricks.
