Jadon Sancho scored his first goal since returning to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night as he notched against Werder Bremen.

Sancho's strike proved to be crucial as Dortmund, who doubled the lead when the loanee scored, ultimately held on for a 2-1 success on the road with ten men after Marcel Sabitzer's red card in first-half stoppage time.

It was at Dortmund that Sancho became one of the hottest properties in European football, which eventually convinced Manchester United to spend more than £70million to land his signature. During his Old Trafford stint the forward struggled for form though and eventually found himself frozen out of the first-team picture after clashing with Erik ten Hag.

Many hoped a switch back to Germany would allow Sancho to rediscover his best form and he began well with an assist on his debut against Darmstadt. However he's been largely ineffective since that outing with questions being asked, although Dortmund boss Edin Terzic is confident

He said: "We were working in training all week on him getting into situations where he can gain confidence. It showed what he is capable of, and hopefully he can continue like this."

Speaking in a press conference earlier in the week Terzic confirmed that Sancho had made it clear he wanted to play more centrally in a No 10 role, but competition made that difficult. He said: "[Sancho] said very confidently that his favourite number is ten. We know that it can be used very flexibly. But Julian Brandt and Marco Reus did really well on the ten."

It's been accepted that Sancho's lack of football is a factor behind his poor form. He featured just four times for United before being exiled from by Ten Hag - and even before that the former England international had struggled to impact games despite the club's best efforts to help him.

Terzic stressed the need for patience as he claimed: "We know that not everyone is at 100 per cent. Jadon hasn't played for a long time, he lacks rhythm. It's often the case that the boys come back after a long downtime or a long break. At the beginning, when everything is new and fun again, you fire up straight away. And then every now and then there's a dip like that."

Sancho had been hugely prolific during his first stint at Dortmund, providing numerous assists and scoring 36 times in his last two seasons. Meanwhile, in almost three years since, he's only found the net 13 times.
