Sean Dyche mocked “Fergie time” after he was denied a priceless win against Manchester United five years ago.

The now Everton boss took his then Burnley side to Old Trafford in January 2019 right at the start of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s stint at the helm. The Red Devils icon had enjoyed a bright start after winning each of his opening six games.

That winning run looked to be coming to an end after Man United went 2-0 down to Dyche’s former side Burnley at Old Trafford - goals coming from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood. And the Clarets remained two goals to the good ahead going into the closing stages.

They were not able to hold out however, as a Paul Pogba penalty and a late strike from Victor Lindelof saw the hosts claim a point, with Dyche left furious by the amount of stoppage time played.

"I was most upset by the added time," Dyche said after the draw. "Where did five minutes come from? I just don't know.

"We all know about Fergie time and all that, and everyone here is used to it, so I'm more talking about the mentality of those five minutes and the lift it gives them. If it's three, then it's different, the fans are thinking it may not be enough time. But five gives them the lift they need."

His protests did not end there. The former Burnley boss was also left irritated by the awarding of Man United’s penalty as Jesse Lingard fell under a challenge. “I just don't like it when people get a touch on shoulder and their legs go from under them,” he added.

“I'm not questioning the player, not remotely saying it's an individual who does that all the time, but just saying players are incredibly strong these days, and yet they get a touch and the legs go. But that seems to be the game these days. Nobody seems to mind and they say it is part of the game.”

Since that match, Dyche hasn’t enjoyed much luck against United. He has won just one out of the last eight games and also lost both of his matches as Everton boss.

Ahead of the 2-0 win at Old Trafford last term, Man United boss Erik ten Hag was full of praise for the work that Dyche has done at Goodison Park. Speaking at the time, he said: “He is obviously a manager doing a great job. Teams are really fit from Everton. Their physical output is outstanding so we have to match that.”
