A contestant became emotional following her head-to-head on the Chase when she secured £50,000 for the team's prize fund, but the group's joy didn't last very long.

The latest episode of the ITV quiz show on Friday saw host Bradley Walsh introduce four new contestants. The quartet had to face professional quizzer Shaun Wallace, known as 'the Dark Destroyer,' in a series of rounds on the show.

The team's experience has been described as "turbulent," with contestant Sandra caught by Shaun in her head-to-head. The next player, Laurence, however, managed to secure £30,000, whilst teammate Marlon went for minus £5,000.

The final contestant, Kate, chose to go for the higher offer of £50,000 as part of her efforts to improve the prize fund after securing £2,000 in the cash builder round. She ended up getting through her head-to-head, which meant that she more than doubled the trio's potential prize fund.

Teary-eyed Kate, who appeared emotional, said: "I can't speak." Bradley however warned: "It's a very emotional moment, however, we haven't won it yet [...] So compose ourselves now [and] get your gameplan ready for the final."

As reported by the Daily Star, viewers were thrilled for Kate. One person said: "Big up Kate for that 50k, she's better than Marlon." Another said: "Just shows this show is so much better when people back themselves instead of [taking a low offer]. Well done Kate, makes for a great and exciting final!" Someone else said: "Aww, Kate's crying already. Would love them to win but we already had a win this week so unlikely. Fingers crossed though."

Despite the excitement, the team were unable to make it through the final round of the ITV show. They managed to answer 15 questions correctly during their turn, but just moments later discovered that they would be walking away without winning the prize fund that they had amassed.

Laurence, Marlon and Kate, who had made it to the final together, following teammate Sandra's departure from the show, were caught by Shaun when it came to his turn. He caught up to them with more than 30 seconds left on the clock. It meant that the contestants didn't win the £75,000 prize fund. Some of the group said that Shaun was "on form," whilst host Bradley said that it had been a "fantastic game" overall. He added: "You made it a brilliant show."

The Chase airs weeknights at 5pm on ITV and ITVX. Previous episodes of the quiz show are available through the streaming platform.
