ITV bosses have already got their lawyers combing through conversations in the Celebrity Big Brother house

It's been just five days since ITV launched its first series of Celebrity Big Brother and the drama, tension and gossip has been continuing to ramp up, much to the delight of TV bosses and eager viewers.

One of the housemates who has been particularly chatty during his time in the house has, unsurprisingly, been Gary Goldsmith - aka Princess Kate's 'buncle' and the thorn in the royals' side. As well as controversially speaking about Kate's health and her whereabouts, despite Buckingham Palace remaining quiet on the matter, he's also spoken about his views on Meghan and other royals.

But not all conversations are safe to air - with Gary's co-stars Sharon Obsourne and Louis Walsh's chats needing some swift editing by producers as their gossiping was screened by lawyers, with only snippets making it to air. Among those to bear the brunt of their catty remarks was James Corden, who Sharon described as a sycophantic name-dropper, Ellen Degeneres, who she said was vomit-inducing, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who was described as a “c-word”.

So will ITV bosses be editing out any inappropriate comments Gary might make regarding the royals? "I think ITV must accept that they've got a responsibility to be careful - they're going have to strike a very difficult balance," royal expert Jennie Bond tells the Mirror. "Anything that Gary says about the royal family is a headline, it's great for the show, it's publicity for ITV. And yet they must be aware that they have a duty to safeguard and protect the health of the person, not to say the royal family obviously. So I imagine they've got lawyers looking through it but yep, there will be some careful editing. I think the slightest inkling that they can give about anything that's going on about the royal family - with the Harry situation Catherine's health or the King's health they'll do their damndest to show."

Jennie warns that his appearance on the ITV show has likely sparked a rift between the Middletons and the royals, pointing out that had Kate's mum Carole known that he would be appearing on Celebrity Big Brother she would have "read him the riot act". "I rather doubt that he did tell her because she would have been against it and there would have been a massive family row! And why would he bother telling her? I don't know but I'm sure if he had told her she would have tried to persuade him not to [do it]," she says. "So now we have another family rift - they've got rifts going on all over the place now - Gary, Meghan's side of the family and Harry's side of the family. And now Carole and Gary and Catherine and William. But it sounds to me that Gary hasn't had much to do with the young royals for quite some time because he said it's quite hard to get hold of her, indicating it's not a close relationship anymore."

As the Princess of Wales continues to recover from the abdominal surgery that she underwent earlier this year, Jennie points out that this would be "the last thing" that she needs and that it's left her feeling "depressed". "I'm not sure how much he knows, I don't think it's a particularly close relationship and I don't think he's part of the 'inner circle' anymore and I think he's increasingly been pushed outside that circle now," she explains. "I think he's very much a freelancer, doing what he wants. I think clearly, whatever's happened to Catherine, she's probably feeling fragile - mentally as well. To have a serious setback like this at the prime of your life, it must knock your confidence and so she'll be fragile at this stage in her recovery and to have this thrown at her... she must just be thinking, 'Why, why, why did Uncle Gary have to do this?' I imagine she's thoroughly depressed about it."

Jennie doubts that Buckingham Palace will comment at all on Gary but suggests that they will be keeping a "watchful eye". "I think they'll completely ignore it unless he says something so completely outrageous that they feel they've been goaded into responding to a reality show. I hope [William and Kate] aren't investing their precious time into something that will be deeply upsetting to watch. He thinks being in there he's a knight in shining armour."

The Mirror has reached out to Kensington Palace for comment.
