'I compared supermarket Mother's Day flowers - one was incredible value'
Only the best will do for our mums, but that doesn't mean shying away from your local supermarket.
There's no limit to the elaborate bouquets you can get from online flower delivery companies or fancy florists. But it's worth knowing that you can get incredible value for money from just popping to your local supermarket to buy your Mother's Day flowers.
Mother's Day takes place this Sunday (March 10), and a popular way of showing how much we appreciate our mother figures is giving them some beautiful blooms. Supermarkets are a great option if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to spoil your mum, but where should you spend your hard-earned cash?
I decided to go to Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Lidl to see which had the best quality and price - and importantly, which would look best after a week in their respective vases. As my cat loves munching on elaborate bouquets, I decided to avoid classics like tulips and lilies go for timeless roses, which my fluffy friend tends to stay away from.
Below you can see a comparison of what the roses looked like when I purchased them, and a week later. I'll also delve into the cost, look, smell, and vibrancy of colour. And one was a complete bargain, offering the best value for money - but I'll warn you, it was a tight call.

I was very happy when I opened up this bunch of vibrant, long stem yellow roses, as the thorns and most of the bottom leaves had been taken off. I always manage to hurt myself, so this was a welcome surprise. I was immediately impressed by the vibrant colour of the yellow roses, which cost £6 I got 12 blooms. Out of all the bunches I bought, this one smelled the best, and looked the freshest. But at £6, this is the most expensive bunch, and for a lower amount of roses.
I wasn't convinced these would last the week, as it said freshness was 'guaranteed' for only five days, so I was incredibly impressed by how they looked. As you can see, they still look as vibrant, although some of the edges have started to discolour, but there's no drooping or fallen leaves.

Tesco
Rose Bouquet - £5
Similar to M&S, I was impressed that there were no thorns, but still plenty of leaves to remove. For £5 I got a whopping 15 beautiful long stem white roses. Although they looked incredibly fresh and impressive, these had the least amount of smell. And I do love the smell of fresh roses.
These said 'guaranteed freshness for seven days', so I was more hopeful that these would last the full week. However, in the day one picture you can see they have already started to open, so it wasn't a given. By day seven, they still looked incredible, with no drooping or fallen leaves, but similar to the M&S ones, they had started to discolour slightly.

Long Stem Roses - £7
These blooms are also yellow, as there weren't many to choose from when I visited the store. They definitely weren't as vibrant as M&S ones to start with, and already had quite a few green spots on them. However, for £1 less at £5, and with 15 long-stem roses, I'd say it's great value for money. They were slightly more closed up than the M&S and Tesco ones, and promising seven days of freshness, I had high hopes for them.
These roses just looked more beautiful the more time went on, so I was really happy with how they turned out after seven days. They don't look as orange-hued as they do in the picture, but I'd definitely say the colour developed into a deeper yellow. They. look great, and apart from the discolouration at the edges, they are in great shape.

Lidl
Quality Roses - £2.59 - See the full Mother's Day collection on the Lidl website.
When I visited Lidl I couldn't see any long-stem roses, but for £2.59 for nine roses, can you really go wrong? I was immediately drawn in by their gorgeous pink colour. The roses themselves were bigger than the others, they smelled amazing and didn't have any pesky thorns to remove. However, with five days of freshness guaranteed, I wasn't sure they'd be able to compete with the others.
Oh how wrong I was! Although the pink colour has slightly faded by day seven, they still look great. I will say, the petals themselves look a bit more droopy than the other bunches, but there are no dead leaves, and they still smell good. These are incredible value for money.

The verdict: Best supermarket Mother's Day roses
The dark horse in this race is the Lidl roses. Although they are short stem, you could buy two bunches and get 18 roses for just £5.18 - 82p less than the 12 M&S roses. These only promise to stay fresh for five days, and still looked great by day seven - bar some discolouration and drooping. But if it's a bargain you're after, I'd go for these. However, for overall quality, it's a tie between M&S and Tesco. These blooms looked incredible by day seven, and I have no doubt they will continue to look great for several more days.
It's worth remembering that these supermarkets now have Mother's Day ranges, so you might find slightly different blooms in-store.
