Sergio Reguilon admits he was "crying like a kid" after Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils were attempting to retain the trophy they'd won last season under Erik ten Hag but were well beaten by Newcastle at Old Trafford. The reverse was their second home 3-0 loss in a matter of days, with Reguilon particularly cut up by the defeat.

The Spaniard was a loan signing back in the summer but found opportunities hard to come by. His outing against Newcastle was one of the seven starts he made. The full-back was determined to help United retain their crown and he took the failure to heart despite Bruno Fernandes ' attempts to console him.

Reguilon told The Times : “We were defending the title and we were out. I don’t care if I am here for six months, I was upset. I don’t know how long I was crying like a kid. Bruno [Fernandes] comes to tell me to relax and I still have the same shit face.”

He also added: “It’s my problem, I am too emotional. I feel everything in football, just like my life. I have to control that more but it’s always been part of me, since I was a kid.”

Following the defeat more questions were asked of Erik ten Hag following the team's slow start to the season. The Dutchman accepted he had to face the music but vowed to fight on, although his future is far from secure beyond this season with Sir Jim Ratcliffe now on board.

"I understand when the results are not there it is logical they are questioning that," he said after the Newcastle loss. "But I am confident I can do it. At this moment we are in a bad place and I take responsibility for it. But I am a fighter. I see it as a challenge."

Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock all scored for the Magpies as Ten Hag accepted responsibility for the poor showing. "It is below the standards everyone expects from Manchester United," he added. "It is not good enough by far and we have to put it right. I take responsibility for it. It is my team and they are not performing."

Reguilon has since left Manchester with his loan spell cut short. He was part of a United backline that struggled to settle on combination - and still do. Ten Hag named another new look back four at the weekend with the team unable to enjoy any continuity.
