Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos has reclaimed the title of the world’s richest person after dethroning Elon Musk.

Bezos, 60, topped the Bloomberg Billionaires Index for the first time since 2021, with a fortune of £158bn. The American, boosted by a surge in the share price of his online retail company, surpassed Tesla boss Musk, who is worth £156bn. Musk lost £24.6bn from his net worth over the past year, while Bezos gained £18.4bn. It comes after Bezos, also owner of Amazon Prime TV, sold off £3.15bn worth of shares since mid-February.

Last month, a US judge threw out Musk’s 2018 pay package, worth around £40bn, that had helped make him the world’s richest person. His electric car company Tesla has suffered a 24 percent drop in shares this year. Musk, 52, who owns social media site X and founded space exploration firm SpaceX, reclaimed the title of the world’s richest person last May. The South African-born American edged out France’s Bernard Arnault.

Arnault, 75, runs one of the world’s biggest conglomerates, LVMH, which includes luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Celine. Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also make the top five.

Bezos, engaged to US news anchor Lauren Sánchez, could wipe out the Czech Republic’s £200bn external debt with his wealth. Amazon also revealed a major expansion in its logistics operation across Europe last year.

Bezos continues to enjoy the high life as he and his fiancee were seen with the Kardashians at a Beyonce gig in California last September. Elon Musk and X are also being sued for a whopping £100.9million in a "staggering" number of lawsuits filled with damning claims brought by former senior executives of Twitter.

The former execs claim they were fired without a reason and are demanding more than $128 million (£100.9 million) in unpaid severance payments. They say Musk "stiffed" them and describe the Tesla billionaire as a man who "believes the rules don’t apply to him" and runs "roughshod over anyone who disagrees with him.” But cavalier Musk has reportedly said "let them sue."

Twitter’s former CEO Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, Chief Legal Counsel Vijaya Gadde and General Counsel Sean Edgett claim in the lawsuit filed Monday that they were fired without a reason on the day in 2022 that Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter, which he later rebranded X.

Because he didn’t want to pay their severance, the executives say Musk “made up fake cause and appointed employees of his various companies to uphold his decision.”
