It's a bad afternoon for anyone trying to access their Facebook Messenger chats. The popular service has been hit by an outage that has left thousands unable to use the platform. The gremlins began at around 3pm with the issues still ongoing almost an hour later.

Down Detector, which monitors outages across the globe, is currently showing thousands of reports which means this is a major issue for the firm.

Speaking on Down Detector's forum page, one unhappy Messenger user said: "Down for Facebook and Messenger. Tried to report it but they are not listening."

Many have also rushed to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their anger with one Messenger user saying "What the hell is happening with Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram?" whilst another added, "Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, & Threads are all down. Can't log in at all..."

It's currently unclear what is causing the problems but Messenger isn't the only service affected. Facebook and Instagram users are also having issues with these popular platforms. Many have been faced with an error message that reads "session expired" or "unexpected error" message.

In fact, at its peak, some 210,000 reports of Facebook being offline were being reported although that number is now slowly dropping..

Speaking about the issues, Meta's Communications Director Andy Stone said in a post X (formerly Twitter): "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."

Mirror Online will continue to offer updates as we get them but it appears things are slowly being fixed.
