Alejandro Garnacho was caught picking his nose on the Manchester United bench after being subbed off during their defeat to Manchester City.

United travelled to City in the Manchester derby on Sunday, taking a surprise lead through Marcus Rashford's superb goal. But Phil Foden pegged them back after the break, before the England international scored a late winner and Erling Haaland wrapped up a 3-1 victory.

Garnacho started at the Etihad Stadium, coming off just after Foden's second goal. He took his place on the bench after enduring a difficult afternoon, with Omari Fosun coming on to replace him.

The cameras quickly found Garnacho sitting on the bench, though he was seen picking his nose and eating what came out. Many viewers were left disgusted by the 19-year-old's actions.

One fan tweeted: "Swear Garnacho just picked his nose and ate it. What an absolute grot bag!" Another added: "Catching Garnacho munching his boogers on the bench is disgusting work."

A third said: "Garnacho caught in 4k just picking his nose and eating it live on sky sports." A fourth simply concluded: "Garnacho, dude, gross."

United produced just one shot on target having enjoyed just 27 percent of the possession. Garnacho was part of the forward line that struggled to make much of an impact against the reigning champions.

But boss Erik ten Hag defended his attackers for their performance, pointing to their form leading into the game. He insisted that his side had to deploy a more defensive shape to deal with City's tactics.

"I don't think it is a good question today. As you see from January we scored many goals. I think we are really progressing on that side. Our frontline is absolutely a threat. We have to see that Rasmus Hojlund is getting back," Ten Hag said.

"But see Garnacho, Rashford and Bruno behind they are in good form and can score goals, will create chances. I think we can score more goals and we can score enough goals to win football games.

"Football is not only about possession. Of course, you need the ball to score a goal and I think we scored a brilliant goal at the start and also after that. I think in the first 20 minutes we had some opportunities more.

"I think we defended brilliant out of possession and on defining moments we didn't have it on our side. Because I think at 1-1 Rashford was on another break and just before the 2-1 Garnacho was on a breakthrough. I think we were really close to win or at least get a draw here."
