Band of Brothers

Produced by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks, this multi-Emmy winning World War II drama launched the career of Damian Lewis and set a new standard for how war could be depicted on TV. Often regarded as one of the best shows ever, Band of Brothers follows the journey of parachute regiment “Easy” Company from their paratrooper training through to the Normandy landing and the invasion of Germany, and eventually the end of the war.
Over ten episodes, the star-studded series – which also features David Schwimmer, Michael Fassbender and Stephen Graham – provides an impeccable representation of not just the terrifying conflict, but also the extraordinary men in the middle of it. Its success would lead to two companion series – The Pacific and Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air.

The Pacific

Following on from the success of Band of Brothers, Spielberg and Hanks teamed up again to produce another World War II epic, this time centred on three Marines in the Pacific theatre of operations. While it might not have had the impact of its predecessor, it remains a powerful viewing experience in its depiction of ordinary people forced to find extraordinary valour.

Sharp Objects

Based on the debut novel of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, this eight-part mystery stars Amy Adams as a troubled reporter who returns to her hometown when two girls disappear, one of whom is found dead and presumed murdered. Reuniting with her estranged family and tormented by her past, this bleak crime story is a slow burn, but worth every minute.

The Night Of

Riz Ahmed officially broke into the US consciousness in this enthralling HBO adaptation of the BBC series Criminal Justice. The Oscar-winner plays a promising student who – after embarking on a night out – becomes wrapped up in a murder and thrown in prison at New York’s Rikers Island.
As he attempts to survive inside, his unorthodox attorney, John Stone (John Turturro), rushes to find anything that might improve his situation.

This six-part crime drama is the latest screen project from The Wire writer and showrunner David Simon. Jon Bernthal leads this chronicle of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption that surrounded it.

House of the Dragon

This Game of Thrones prequel series takes viewers back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. It tells the story of the great civil war that tore the family apart, complete with all the violence and brutality that Thrones fans will be familiar with.

Based on a true story, the thespians portray Susan and Christopher Edwards, a seemingly normal – if eccentric and delusional – British couple who, in Susan’s own words “get into a bit of a pickle” when two dead bodies are discovered buried in their back garden.

Much like Channel 4’s It’s a Sin, the series follows the devastating effect of the AIDS pandemic, but this time from the perspective of six New Yorkers with intersecting lives.

Big Little Lies
