A dad has been arrested on live TV after a toddler was caught waving a loaded handgun around and pointing at himself.

Shane Osborne, 45, was charged with neglect after neighbour's discovered his four-year-old son running around with a gun outside his home in Beech Grove, Indiana, US, on January 7.

The arrest was filmed on the reality TV show On Patrol: Live.

Beech Grove Deputy Police Chief Robert Mercuri said: “It’s almost incomprehensible what you’re watching.

"I saw it the next day and even though I knew the outcome, as I’m watching the video, I was still scared.

"You find yourself catching your breath. I don’t know how you can’t watch that video, parent or non-parent and not be shocked and disturbed.”

Concerned neighbour Nicole Summers called police after spotting a toddler in a nappy running around outside their home with a gun.

The child kept walking around with the loaded gun and “kept going ‘pow, pow, pow, pow',” according to Nicole.

She said: “He was standing in the middle of the hallway and he was just kind of holding it behind his back and I thought…like that’s a real gun. I sell guns for a living, so I know what a gun looks like."

Police arrived at the home to find the gun as Osborne denied he owned one.

He told police: "I don't have a gun. " I have never brought a gun into this house, if there is, it's my cousin's."

The officer asks the toddler at one point: "'Where'd you put down that toy?' as they searched the home.

During the search a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol was found in the back of a desk drawer.

Fortunately, the toddler was unharmed as the bullets had not yet been chambered in the gun.

The shocking footage left viewers horrified as the toddler can be seen waving the loaded gun around the apartment hall.

Osborne told police he was staying up to take care of the toddler after he was sick.

However, he quickly became distracted as the child got his hands on the loaded gun.

The boy was returned to his mum, where he lives full time.

Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley praised the officers who quickly secured the gun.

He said: “As with all of you, I’m mortified at what took place and I’m so thankful that no one was hurt, especially the young child."
