This is the shocking moment a toddler waves a loaded handgun around and points it at himself in terrifying footage.

The terrifying incident happened in Beech Grove, Indiana, US, on January 7 after concerned neighbours spotted a toddler in a nappy running around outside his home with a gun.

Police were called to the home, where the child was living with his dad, to try and find the gun.

During the search a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol was found in the back of a desk drawer.

The toddler was unharmed in the terrifying incident as the bullets had not yet been chambered in the gun.

The shocking footage was shown on reality television show On Patrol: Live, which left viewers horrified, as the young toddler can be seen waving the loaded gun around the apartment hall.

As the child walked outside his home he points the gun at the doors and into the air.

He then pointed the gun at himself and pulled the loaded trigger.

Police can be seen talking to the child's dad, who claimed he didn't own a gun, insisting it was his cousin's who was staying with him.

The officer asks the toddler at one point: "'Where'd you put down that toy?' as they searched the home.

The dad told police he was staying up to take care of the toddler after he was sick but quickly became distracted as the child got his hands on the loaded gun.

Police said the boy was returned to his mum, where he lives full time.

Sean Larkin, who was on the show, admitted seeing the footage was "very different" to reading about similar types of incidents.

He said: "We hear these types of stories where kids come across this firearms, these horrific results that do happen sometimes, but seeing it on video is definitely very different."

Curtis Wilson, a commentator on the show, said if it wasn't for the toddler's neighbours things could have been a lot different.

He added: "It could be really a tragic situation."

Viewers were left disgusted after seeing the footage as one person wrote: "'The father shouldn't be allowed to ever own a gun again."

"He should be charged with reckless endangerment, tried, found guilty, and sentenced to the maximum."

Another added: "If you leave a gun out where a child can get to it and use it, you should be criminally liable for whatever damage the child does.

"Similar to a felony murder statute, you need not pull the trigger to be convicted of homicide."
