Inside one of UK's most haunted prisons – where ghosts 'speak and bang on walls'
A man has shared the horrifying moment ghosts 'spoke' to him, banged on cell walls and launched his camera to the ground while on a visit to one of the UK's most haunted prisons.
Tony Ferguson, 37, a personal trainer from New Forrest, has been visiting the Shepton Mallet Prison over the last few years - the scene of "unexplainable" and "sinister" happenings. He managed to capture some of the spooky events on camera and posted them onto TikTok, attracting 161,000 views.
Footage shows a camera being "launched" to the ground, as well as spooky noises emerging in the background. Speaking to NeedToKnowOnline, Tony said: "As soon as we entered the prison, we felt like we were being watched. The prison looks very eery as it hasn't changed, it has an old-school look and when you step through that gate it's like you are stepping back in time."
"Whilst conducting an experiment in the chapel area, we had a camera launched which left people very much on edge, this was also witnessed by members of public. The camera sadly broke as it went with some force, luckily we had another locked off camera which was recording the encounter.
He continued: "We then went into the prison wings where we encountered several banging noises on command and disembodied voices which were heard by everyone mainly saying "get out" "go" "leave". We also heard walking coming towards us by an unseen force, we called this out and at this very point we saw a strange glowing light coming past us at the same time we mentioned walking noises.

Tony managed to capture some of the spooky happenings on camera (Jam Press)"There were also walking noises above us even though everyone was on the bottom floor. Overall the night left many people on edge and we encountered so many things that we couldn't debunk."
Tony's visit to the once-military prison was part of an event hosted by ghost2ghost paranormal investigation, which allowed members of the public to experience paranormal activities. But it was not the first time ghost hunter Tony explored the spooky halls of Shepton Mallet. In 2019, the 37-year-old visited the prison with the company UK ghost catchers, where he again claims to have experienced paranormal activity.
He said: "We encountered banging noises in the cells and also heard a cell door slamming which left the public screaming as it was that loud. Also in the chapel area, a member of the public seemed to pass out and wake up becoming very aggressive to the point we had to get him out of the chapel area."
Shepton Mallet was built in 1610 following an act introduced by King James I, which stated that all counties had to have their own house of correction. However, in 2013, the Georgian prison closed and instead opened its doors to the public as a tourist attraction.
The prison is now most commonly associated with many tales of paranormal activity and ghosts. Tony said: "One of the most popular stories is that of the White Lady. She is seen in several places, but the A Wing is one of the main places she is seen or felt. Staff and prisoners would often complain of an icy wind moving through the wing, the sweet smell of perfume and shadowy figures.
Tony posted the video footage on TikTok (Jam Press)"I returned alone to the prison with a fellow paranormal investigator, Paul Cissell, where we had the prison to ourselves and called out for the lady in white in A wing. On doing so, we had a female disembodied voice responding to us which we heard at the time.
"During the investigation, Paul Cissell wasn't himself and I felt the need to stay back as Paul was behaving very odd and it wasn't till he left the wing he came back to and said he just felt angry for no reason", he added.
Shepton is now open as a tourist attraction offering guided tours, self-guided tours and ghost tours. Tony says the jail is in the same condition as it was when it closed its doors to prisoners in 2013.
He added: "The cells are original, mouldy, cold, damp and wet. Shepton mallet have left the prison to how original prisoners would have lived and the conditions are not nice. The beds the prisoners slept on are still there, there are bullets in the walls where prisoners were shot outside.
"There is a hanging pit and many more items you would find in a jail. Considering the jail is very old it seems to be in great shape. Everything has been left in its original state so that people could see what the prisoners had to live in."
