A picturesque UK staycation spot packed with charming shops, cosy pubs and beautiful scenery is so loved by tourists that China plans to build its own replica.

Stratford-Upon-Avon is famous for being the birthplace of Shakespeare, and with its gorgeous buildings, views of the River Avon and plethora of museums, it's not surprising that the market town is such a hit with visitors. In fact it's proving so popular with Chinese tourists that China is looking to build their own version reports MyLondon.

There are plans to construct a replica of Stratford in the city of Fuzhou, complete with Shakespeare's birthplace, several streets and the River Avon. This will be part of what will be called Sanweng, which translates to 'Three Masters'. The idea is that Sanweng will pay tribute to three great writers - Shakespeare, Cervantes, who will be honoured with a 'Little Alcala', and Tang Xianzu, a Chinese writer from the region. All three passed away in 1616.

"There is an enormous interest for Shakespeare in China," said Phillipa Rawlinson from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust during a 2016 visit. "The trust has had a long working relationship with cultural organisations to promote Shakespeare's works life and times to Chinese audiences."

For those who are trying to follow in the footsteps of the Bard, there's heaps to explore in the Warwickshire town. For a start there's Shakespeare's Birthplace itself, where you can explore the house and gardens where he grew up. Other highlights include the schoolroom where he learned to read and write, as well as the childhood home of Anne Hathaway (Shakespeare's wife, not the Hollywood actress).

Unsurprisingly the town also plays home to plenty of theatres, with plenty of modern day productions. For those feeling peckish, you'll be spoiled for choice with everything from fancy restaurants to laidback pubs and cafes serving up some classic British grub.

Stratford-upon-Avon Canal is also well worth a visit for those who fancy a stroll along the River Avon, with plenty of artwork, shops and restaurants along the walking routes. You can also enjoy plenty of canal boat tours if you want to enjoy views from the water.

With over 800 years of history there's heaps more to discover in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and the good news is that there are plenty of different walking tours throughout the town where you can learn some of the highlights. Oh, and leave time on the itinerary to explore the bustling farmer's market too!
