Whilst white vinegar and baking soda are holy grail items in many cleaning cupboards, sometimes even they can't save a white load of laundry from looking dull, lifeless and grey.

One woman took to social media to share her white laundry failure and asked for advice : "I'm about to go on holiday so I thought I'd use a 60C wash on my whites on a white setting. Quite a few things were looking a bit grey. I used washing soda, Oxy powder for whites and a Persil washing pod."

She added: "Even on a 60C wash, nothing came out any whiter. I don't know what to try next. Any ideas, please? My bras that were bought as white are really grey now. Help."

Her desperate plea was answered by her zealous cleaning and laundry fellows, who had just the trick to brighten any item, whether it's white towels, t-shirts, or socks. Cleaning enthusiasts on Mrs Hinch's Facebook page have found yet another trick to keep whites white and sparkling.

Commenters recommended several different products, but one that kept popping up was Napisan. One cleaning enthusiast offered some firm advice and said: "Napisan or Dr Beckmann Glowhite and don't use pods with white items, use white powder not coloured pods."

Another commented: "Soak and wash whites in Napisan, it's brilliant." Whilst a third suggested: "Soak in Napisan, does my children's and it's brilliant." Another said: "Soak for a few days in Napisan then do normal a wash. A hot wash, I don't believe in."

A fifth commentor said: "I soaked my bra in a lingerie whitener (from a supermarket) then washed normally with other whites on 40C with added Napisan. Now in my drawer rather than the bin!" Another commentor said: "Helps to whiten clothes in as little as 10 minutes."

Napisan is a stain remover, using active oxygen to remove tough stains but a box will set you back £4.50. You can soak your clothes in it or add it with detergent into the washing machine drawer. It's said to kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria in laundry, removing stains even at low temperatures. Napisan is currently on offer at for £4 a box.
