An expert says there's a tasty drink that can not only help people to stop smoking and vaping but could also repair some of the damage that's been done.

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and therefore smoking and vaping can be a truly hard habit to kick. The good intentions may be there but once the cravings start it's all too easy to reach for a quick ciggie or puff on a vape to quieten the nagging urge.

With the government announcing plans to bring in a ban on disposable vapes, many may think now's as good a time as ever to try and quit for good. However, with all the will in the world, those addicted will struggle to just go cold turkey and get on with a new healthier life.

But there's a certain drink that could help ease the yearnings, according to experts at GoSmokeFree. They believe drinking herbal tea may be the key to quitting for good because of the effect they produce in the body.

"Herbal teas can be a promising ally in the battle against nicotine cravings," they said. "These teas provide a nicotine-like stimulant effect, presenting individuals with a satisfying replacement for the habitual act of vaping or smoking."

They point to research that suggests ginseng - found in some herbal teas - may possess therapeutic properties for nicotine addiction because it weakens the impact of dopamine, a pleasure-associated neurotransmitter released during smoking.

Green tea is also a winning variety because it floods the system with micronutrients and amino acids that can in turn reduce the urge to smoke. Not only can it assist with cravings but it could help to undo the harm smoking and vaping has done to the body too.

"Research suggests it also helps to repair tissues damaged by smoking, helping to heal the whole body in the long run."

There are other dietary choices that can be made and tweaked that will help in the battle to stop for good. Spicy or sugary foods should be avoided as they can exacerbate hankerings. Instead those trying to give up should opt for healthy snacks that keep the mouth and hands occupied which lessens the chance of reaching for a puff.

Vegetable sticks such as carrots, celery, cucumbers, and green peppers offer a satisfying and nutritious alternative. Cinnamon sticks can also help ease cravings and act as substitutes for cigarettes or vapes during moments of temptation. Sucking on cinnamon sticks delivers a quick hit of flavour and the familiar shape can help fulfil the psychological urge to smoke.

Meditation and exercise are also key in the fight to be smoke-free and should be incorporated into the plan which will make the cravings become more manageable over time. "It's important to remember that it's not just about quitting, it's also about feeling healthier and making lasting changes for a healthy, nicotine-free life," they said.
