Ground Force stars Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh once almost came to blow during filming the BBC show, all thanks to some sawdust.

Top gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh, fellow plant lover Charlie Dimmock and builder Tommy Walsh became stars almost straight away and forged life-long friendships thanks to the starring together on the gardening series, but that doesn't mean arguements didn't ever occur.

The show ran for an amazing 12 series from 1997 to 2005. On Ground Force, the team tried to turn a rubbish garden into a beautiful one in just two days. As well as getting 12 million people watching at its most popular, Ground Force made more people buy garden decking. BandQ said sales went up from £5,000 in 1997 to £16 million in 2001.

"When we first started filming we were polite to each other for the first two series but by the third series we were like family," Charlie has previously recalled. "My main memory of Ground Force was laughing lots. It was the same team every week, as well as the same production and crew. You know what it's like when you work with a team of people and you get on."

While the three main stars have stayed close friends, there were times when they didn't agree. During one big argument in 2000, the usually calm Alan got very angry while planting beds in a garden in Pitsea, Essex. While cutting wood, Tommy accidentally got sawdust all over the flowers, which made Alan really upset.

He told Radio Times, "Call me picky if you like but I like my Ground Force gardens to be pristine when we finish them," and "I do not get a thrill from seeing them covered in dandruff." Even though they were shocked at first, Tommy said, "For a while it did get a bit hairy." Tommy was annoyed because he was working so hard and Alan was complaining about some sawdust.

Alan thought the one good thing about their argument was that it made their co-host Charlie quiet for a bit. "She just kept her head down and fiddled with her water feature," he said. "For a while it did get a bit hairy," said Tommy. "But when we'd both calmed down we actually kissed (yes) and made up. What made me cross was that I was working flat out to get everything ready and here was Alan moaning about a bit of stray sawdust."

But they didn't stay mad for long and are still friends even though they went their separate ways. Many fans were sad when Alan said he was leaving Ground Force in 2001 because he had done enough shows. He kept doing gardening shows for the BBC, presented Songs of Praise, and was on BBC Radio 2.

In 2007, Alan started his own ITV afternoon chat show with famous guests, and it lasted for seven years. The gardening whizz has many other skills, including a fantastic singing voice that amazed viewers of All Star Musical in March 2019. Recently, Alan has returned to our screens in Love Your Garden, where his makeover squad helps those who need it most.

Tommy stayed in the entertainment industry and has hosted countless TV shows of his own. These include Cowboys and Angels, Challenge Tommy Walsh, Tommy's Ultimate Workshop, Tommy's DIY survival, Tommy Walsh's Eco House and Flip That House with Tommy Walsh.

He also had a minor acting part in the film One, writes DIY and gardening books, and has his own DIY brand sold in Poundland. Last year, Tommy joined the presenting team on daytime favourite Homes Under The Hammer and now he is host of BBC series Clean It, Fix It.

After Ground Force ended in 2005, the gardening expert presented shows like The Joy of Gardening and Charlie's Garden Army, as well as a gardening slot on American TV station CBS. In an unexpected move, she made a cameo on Hollyoaks in August 2002 as a special guest booked by Gordon Cunningham to unveil the Jubilee Gardens.

Charlie also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef in 2006, was President of the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) from 2003 to 2004 and now hosts BBC series Garden Rescue. Earlier this year, Charlie revealed that she still keeps in touch with her former Ground Force colleagues.

"I haven't seen them recently, but we're still in contact. Occasionally we chat or bump into each other," she shared with World of Cruising. "Tommy teases me that we're getting old now, which is true, but we have loads of happy memories of filming lots and lots of laughter."
