Luke Shaw's season is over - and his place at Euro 2024 is in serious doubt

Luke Shaw's season is effectively over after he was ruled out for several months with a hamstring injury - with his Euro 2024 England place also in doubt.

The Manchester United defender came off just before half-time in Sunday's 2-1 victory against Luton, with further assessment revealing the severity of the problem.

The 28-year-old left-back had been forced off at half-time in United's previous game, a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa, but was deemed fit enough to start at Kenilworth Road. Shaw's enforced absence is a major blow for United, as they continue to push for a Champions League place, and could put his place at this summer's Euros in jeopardy.

Although Shaw is expected to be fit again by the end of May, with the Euros starting on June 14, any setbacks or a slower than expected recovery could see him miss out on the tournament.

United released a statement which said: " Luke Shaw has sustained a muscle injury and will be out for an extended period. Further assessment is still needed to determine the severity, but we expect him to be absent for a few months."

Shaw's latest setback has left United boss Erik ten Hag without a recognised left-back, with Diogo Dalot now likely to have to fill in there during his prolonged absence.

Shaw has endured an injury-ravaged season, which has seen him make just 15 appearances for United in all competitions.

He missed three months at the start of the season, between August and November, due to a muscle injury, and was sidelined again with a hamstring problem which saw him to miss four games between December and January.

Shaw returned to action at the start of February after recovering from the hamstring issue, but he has now suffered another setback, although it has not been confirmed if it is a recurrence of the same injury.
