There's nothing worse than someone who behaves poorly in a restaurant.

When you offer to take someone out to dinner, there are a few etiquette rules you expect them to follow, like not being rude to the staff and not chewing with their mouth open. But one man was left outraged when he took his sister for a celebratory meal and she broke another of the unspoken rules of dining - by spending way too much of his money on expensive cocktails.

The man wanted to treat his sister for her birthday but was horrified when she took it upon herself to order £160 worth of cocktails on top of some of the most expensive food items on the menu, meaning he had to pay "100s and 100s" to cover the bill.

The ordeal was shared in a post on Mumsnet by the man's wife, who claimed the bill was so expensive she had to "bail him out" with some of her own cash so he could "get through the rest of the month". She wrote: "My husband took his sister out for dinner to celebrate her birthday at the weekend - it was a nice restaurant so he knew it wouldn't be cheap, but his sister ended up ordering the most expensive food items on the menu and had eight cocktails at £20 a go!

"The meal ended up costing 100s and 100s of pounds - so much so that I've had to bail him out so he could get through the rest of the month. If someone is treating me to a meal, I always make sure I don't choose the most expensive thing on the menu - surely this is just basic manners?!"

At the end of her post, the woman asked if her sister-in-law was being "really grabby" by spending so much of her brother's money, and many commenters agreed that her behaviour was "rude".

One person wrote: "I agree that it's rude. I'd always try to choose something mid-price range at the most if someone else was paying," while another added: "I would have to speak to her and ask her why she felt free to spend so much of your family's money." A third also posted: "So cheeky. You don’t take advantage of someone's good nature and rip the a**e out of it."

However, others accused the man of not speaking up sooner and telling his sister he couldn't afford the bill. Someone shared: "The food I couldn't get worked up over, sometimes I only like the more expensive items on the menu, but ordering the cocktails was very cheeky. He should've told her he couldn't afford to pay for them too before she ordered the second one!"

As someone else argued: "If you are really being treated, you should be able to pick whatever you want from the menu. What isn't appropriate is ordering to excess. So two mains would be greedy, and eight cocktails is greedy."
