A stepmum has divided opinion over her refusal to pay surgery fees for her husband's young daughter from a previous relationship, despite winning a huge amount of money during a Las Vegas gambling trip. The 30-year-old defended herself by reasoning that she had put the money - the amount of which was never revealed - into a trust for the couple's even younger daughter, seemingly unbeknownst to her partner, and so couldn't access it regardless.

The woman explained her situation in a recent Reddit post: "I, 30, am married to my husband Tony, 35. We have one biological daughter together Claire, five, and he has a daughter Ana, 10, from a previous relationship. Right before Tony and I got married I went on my bachelorette trip to Vegas and won a significant amount of money. The money was a pre-marital asset so it went into my account and I paid off some debt and then took the remaining money and put it into a trust for Claire."

Since then, it transpired that Ana needed surgery and Tony's ex-wife asked for help paying it as it is expensive. She went on: "Tony talked to me about it and asked if we could use some of the money I won in Vegas. I explained the money was in a trust for Claire and we couldn’t take it out.

"Tony got upset I only thought about Claire and never put anything aside for Ana especially since it happened right before her becoming my stepdaughter." The couple ended up in a major argument over the money, resulting in the husband refusing to speak with his current wife. While she wonders if she has done anything wrong in the first place.

More than 2,500 people replied to the post in just 48 hours, with many calling her out for not thinking about Ana. One ranted: "It was wrong of you to not think of your stepdaughter when it can to what to do with it. Don’t become a stepparent if you don’t want to treat another kid equally to your bio kid," and another agreed with: "I'd be very upset too."

Others sided with the stepmum, however, as one person wrote: "It makes complete sense that you wouldn't have considered putting aside any of your winnings for Ana's benefit." Someone else noted: "You set up a trust for your child. Good job you did because you would have been pressured into using this money for something at some point."

Quite a few people were on the fence about it and called it "hard to judge" without knowing the whole story. As one user added: "I am always fascinated when I read stories involving step parents/parenting, and relationships within combined families. In this case, there is so much information missing regarding the above matters."
