The Brooklyn Nets have said goodbye to head coach Jacque Vaughn.

On Monday, the Nets confirmed that Vaughn, 49, was no longer their boss after a series of poor results. He had been in charge for 14 months. The New York team is not doing well, sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 21 wins and 33 losses.

They decided to let him go after two big losses to the Boston Celtics. The last game was particularly bad, with the Nets losing 136-86.

A Nets spokesman said: "The Brooklyn Nets have relieved Jacque Vaughn of his head coaching duties. An interim head coach will be named in the near future."

Vaughn thought he might lose his job during the All-Star Weekend. Then on Monday morning, they told him he was done. The Nets haven't won much lately, especially when playing away from home. They need to catch up if they want to be in the playoffs.

Vaughn blamed the embarrassing defeat to the Celtics on a lack of continuity among his players in the wake of the trade deadline, but he remained confident he could turn things around if given time. "I think it’s far from that," said Vaughn.

"These guys haven’t played together. [Cameron Johnson] has never played with Dennis Schroder, and it goes down the line. Day’Ron [Sharpe] is just getting back tonight. I don’t think you can count on your one hand how many times you’ve seen games like this from this group. I have total confidence in this group."

However, after a promising first season in charge, circumstances have changed. Vaughn was made head coach in November 2022 after briefly being interim boss in 2020 and oversaw 75 matches last season, finishing with a solid 43-32 record.

The team didn't do so well in the playoffs, though. The Nets, entering as the sixth seed, were swept aside by the Philadelphia 76ers, and their poor form has carried over into this season. His time as head coach ends with a 64-65 regular season record.

Vaughn, who took the reigns from Steve Nash, got his second chance as a league head coach after leading the Orlando Magic from 2012 to 2015, ending with a 58-158 record.

Having spent 12 years playing in the league, Vaughn could fall back onto his extensive experience as an assistant coach. It seems that if he does come back to the NBA, it will likely be in this type of role after the disappointing stint at Barclays Center.
