Forget expensive skincare products, it turns out some simple changes to your hair could knock 10 years off your appearance.

Many of us spend a lot of money on making ourselves look younger, whether it's expensive moisturisers or making sure to regularly apply SPF. But it turns out the secret to looking younger could actually be your hair. While the cut, colour and style of your locks can help you achieve a more youthful appearance, the opposite can be said for some hair styles.

Makeup artist and bridal stylist Dana Tate regularly shares her tricks and tips online, and in a video uploaded to TikTok she urged people to "stop doing these things with your hair to look younger," adding that the mistakes could end up adding "10 years" onto a person. Firstly, Dana recommended people to not have "super short bangs," or fringes.

While you might think fringes make you look youthful, it could have the opposite effect. VS Sassoon stylist Rob Reeves explained: "It's tempting to go for a blunt fringe once forehead wrinkles start to appear, but a heavy fringe closes off your face and makes your eyes appear smaller. It also highlights fine lines. Wispy, long fringes are far more flattering and versatile too."

Many people might use hairsprays as a way to effectively 'lock' their styles into place, but as well as giving you a "helmet head", Dana also claims it's "making you look older".

While Dana didn't go into the specifics, Amanda Von Dem Hagen, International educator and skincare expert at Glo Skin Beauty previously explained that hairspray "contains alcohol and lacquers that will dry out your skin, causing it to become dehydrated and look much older". It can also have the same effect on hair.

So it's important to not spray too liberally. Instead, you should just cover your head in an evenly light dusting, holding the nozzle of the canister around 15cm away from your hair, and not focusing on one spot.

Lastly, Dana explained that "hair colour that's too dark for you isn't doing you any favours. Even if you love dark hair try a few face-rimming highlights to brighten up around your face and make you look at least 10 years younger."
