Aldi cashiers are superior and slightly intimidating, as they are able to scan through your trolley of groceries at lightning speed - but it's not always a smooth ride.

The supermarket told the Mirror this Olympic-style checkout process isn't to pump with you with anxiety, but to be as 'efficient' as possible which in turns, keeps their prices competitively low. It's a sacrifice most of us are willing to make, especially during the cost of living crisis. After all, who cares about sweaty palms and a fast heartbeat when your dinner has cost less than a fiver?

However, one woman was left reeling from a trip to her local store after a cashier made a 'ridiculous remark'.

The mum, who is thought to live in Australia, shared a snap of what she bought on Facebook back in 2020. She captioned the post: "Feeling really really annoyed. Just went into Aldi to grab a few items for dinner, a total of 10 items. When the cashier started scanning them through and I place them into a bag, he said to me, 'next time you come into the store bring a trolley to load your groceries into'."

She was baffled by his comment and asked why she would need to do that. "He said 'to load your groceries into, to make it faster for the other customers'," she explained. The woman went on to say: "I was so irritated by this. I HAVE 10 ITEMS MATE.

"Here's an idea Aldi, if you want to make things faster for your customers, how about you open more registers, have an express lane for small shoppers or have self serve registers. What ever happened to good old fashioned service?"

Many people were in agreement with the woman, with one branding the man's comment "ridiculous". They replied: "That's ridiculous with how many items you had! Fair enough if you were trying to load a whole belt full into bags but that shop is tiny!!!!" Another wrote: "For only a few items like this I’d definitely only have a bag/my own basket as well. Very silly to get a giant deep trolley for only a bags worth."

A third person added: "I went in for three items once. And the lady said the same to me and I laughed at her." However a former Aldi employee thought they were being a bit harsh.

They posted: "Aldi staff are told to encourage customers to use trolleys to save time at the registers. The poor guy was just doing as he is told. I know this because I used to work there." Speaking about the incident to news.com.au a spokesperson for Aldi Australia said that using a trolley to shop at their stores isn't a policy, but they do "recommend" customers use one when purchasing "multiple products as it saves time at the register".
