Ghislaine Maxwell once met the Queen and considers it one of the best moments of her life.

The convicted sex offender spent time with the late monarch after being introduced to her by Prince Andrew and they discussed their love for horses.

The former socialite, 61, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for grooming young girls for paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Speaking from jail, she recalled how Elizabeth II had a "sparkle" in her eyes and said she was "profoundly sorry" to hear of her death in September last year.

Maxwell had been a guest of the disgraced Duke of York to Buckingham Palace on several occasions and was also photographed with her lover Epstein at Balmoral in 1999.

The Queen is thought to have been at the estate at the same time.

She told the Mail on Sunday: "I thought the Queen was one of the most exceptional women I ever had the honour and privilege of meeting."

It's not clear when the encounter took place.

However, other times Maxwell and Epstein attended royal events include in June 2000 for Andrew's 40th birthday at Windsor Castle.

This was hosted by the Queen.

The following day the couple joined the Duke at Ascot.

That December, they also attended what Andrew described as "a straightforward shooting weekend" at Sandringham.

Maxwell is serving her time in the Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institute and is expected to challenge her conviction.

And while Andrew has tried to distance himself from her, she has described him as a "dear friend".

Epstein hanged himself in prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial for sex offences.

Andrew was accused of sexually abusing trafficking victim Virginia Giuffre on three occasions at Maxwell's London home, Epstein's Manhattan townhouse and in the Virgin Islands.

He denied the allegations against him and later came to an out of court settlement, reportedly worth around £9.8 million, with his accuser.

The settlement is not an admission of guilt and Prince Andrew continues to deny any wrongdoing.

A gagging clause signed by Andrew and Ms Giuffre is due to be lifted in the coming months, it is reported.

The Duke stepped down from royal duties and the late Queen stripped him of his military affiliations and patronages in the wake of a sex scandal last year.

Prince Harry criticised his uncle in his new book Spare.

He described the controversy surrounding the affair as "a shameful scandal".

These comments now see the Duke of Sussex become the first member of the Royal Family to publicly criticise Andrew.
