Kate Garraway made an emotional return to Good Morning Britain last week following the death of her beloved husband Derek Draper and she is now looking forward to moving on with her life following her colossal loss.

Less than a week after the funeral of her late husband, Derek, Kate bravely returned to the ITV show where she was given a supportive welcome back by her Good Morning Britain colleagues. Mum-of-two Kate was praised by fans for showing such bravery and grace given her grief after her husband Derek sadly passed away in January following a four-year battle with Covid.

Derek, a former political lobbyist, suffered a cardiac arrest in December. He spent Christmas in hospital with Kate and their children, Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, by his side, before he sadly passed away in early January. Derek was laid to rest earlier this month, where Sir Elton John sang at his funeral and his brave teenage daughter Darcey carried his coffin.

The funeral took place at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill the same church where they tied the knot nearly two decades ago. A few days after the funeral, Kate, 56, spoke to her colleagues Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid from home via video call. At the time, she told the Good Morning Britain audience that she was ready to get back to work, saying "Derek would want me to do this."

Despite receiving lots of support from viewers, some people were worried that she might be taking on too much too soon. However, when she officially rejoined her colleagues in the studio later in the week, Kate said it was "lovely" to be back, even though she felt "a bit wobbly".

A source told OK! Magazine that Kate is feeling strong and ready for what the future holds as they insisted that there is no reason for fans to be worried or concerned for the TV star. "People are worried about her doing too much but Kate is strong and she knows what she's doing. She's been living with this for a long time. Work is where she wants and needs to be," the insider told.

While Derek was ill, Kate had become his full-time carer - an immensely important role for her family - however now back on-screen, she could see a lack of purpose in her work, which is common among those grieving, according to grief specialist Carole Henderson, who spoke to The Mirror about Kate's return to Good Morning Britain.

Reflecting on how Kate may be feeling back in the spotlight on national TV, Carole said: "It may be much harder than she's anticipated, while everyone can imagine how the first few days back will be strange, what is often not considered is that surprisingly quickly people forget how new and fragile you are and start treating you as the person you used to be."

The expert says those grieving often long to return to normality, however, this is easier said than done. "While returning to a supportive environment can be positive, it can simultaneously be a drain. Grief can sap your energy and leave you exhausted.

"A large part of your system is processing the pain leaving fewer resources to cope with the everyday stresses. What seems crucial to your colleagues can seem pointless or banal compared to what's going on in your head. Some people do much better going back to work, the routine providing structure and purpose. Some really struggle and employers and colleagues need to realise that the person grieving might not know which one they are until they try."

Kate announced her Derek's sad death on Instagram, with a post which read: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.

"Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
