Crystal Palace are considering a move for Gareth Southgate with Roy Hodgson facing the sack if he loses his next outing at Chelsea on Monday night.

The Eagles have fallen down the table, winning just two of their last 12 games as they meander closer to the relegation zone. Hodgson, who helped save the club last season, has been unable to keep that momentum going and questions are being asked about his future.

Fans have made their anger known, accusing the Palace hierarchy of holding the club back, and they are having to consider alternatives in the dugout. There are a lack of short-term solutions with the Eagles potentially eyeing up the England boss come the summer, when his future may become clear following the Euros.

The Sun reports that Steve Cooper is another man on their shortlist. He is available having left Nottingham Forest but has previously been considered for the role and overlooked. Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui is also on their radar but he would demand a big budget in the summer and the ability to pick his transfers.

Palace got promoted to the top flight via the play-offs in 2012 and have retained their Premier League status ever since. Hodgson concedes that the current run of results has been the toughest period he's endured throughout his time as a manager, which has spanned almost four decades

He said: “It’s the toughest period in my career for one reason and that is that the fans have turned so much against us and they are the people we cannot afford to turn against us. If we are to win games, if this team is going to do it, they are not going to be able to do it if the fans are going to be constantly up in arms about everything.

“On the other hand, it joins other periods in my life where I have been happier and more content, of course. It’s not been that long, it is really a three-game period that has turned the fans and that has made life very difficult and very uncomfortable."

During the recent 5-0 defeat at Arsenal Palace fans held up a banner at the Emirates which read: "Wasted potential. On and off the pitch, weak decisions. Taking us backwards."
