Diners outraged as London restaurant sells scrambled eggs on toast for £58
Heading out for breakfast or brunch is always a nice treat, but you might think twice about tucking in when a plate of scrambled eggs and toast will set you back a whopping £58 a serving.
What's more, if you want to order a drink to accompany your food, a glass of orange juice will cost an additional £9.
That's the situation at HIDE restaurant in Mayfair. While it is admittedly a Michelin-star establishment, diners are having a mixed reaction to the cost.
HIDE caused a stir when it was revealed that their breakfast dish cost £32 in 2023. But patrons now have to fork out even more for the truffled scrambled eggs and toast, which now costs a minimum of £36 a serving. And that price rises even further, to £58, if they opt for white truffle.
HIDE is a Michelin-starred restaurant and bar set over three floors (Jam Press)One customer described the dish as "basic", while another wrote: "Simply adding truffle to bread doesn't automatically elevate one to the status of a chef. The pricing was exceptionally high without any apparent justification."
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
Another reviewer described the meal was "tasteless", noting that she "couldn't even smell [the truffle]".
But, while the price has floored some diners, others have been left impressed by the breakfast dish. One visitor said it was a "must-try". Another person agreed, saying: "Food on the pricey side, but you pay for the experience."
Hide also offers its own version of the full English, featuring grilled smoked streaky bacon, homemade black pudding, Huntsham Farm Middle White 28 pork sausage, slow roast tomatoes, Cacklebean eggs and sourdough toast. That dish costs £28.
Alternatively, you can enjoy warm coconut milk porridge, date and tamarind compote and virgin rapeseed oil for £16, or a croissant, which will set you back £6.
Just last year, a family made headlines after revealing they had been charged more than £300 for four drinks and a snack at a tourist hotspot restaurant in Greece. They shared a photo of their receipt on Reddit after their experience at Eclipse on Platis Gialos beach in Mykonos - and people were stunned.
It showed they spent €360 (£309) on one beer, one mojito, two milkshakes, one Greek salad, bread and one portion of calamari, the latter costing around £64 alone.
The diners explained: "We were walking to find a spot in front of the beach a Platis Gialos and there are many restaurants with beach furniture in front of the beaches. As we were walking, waiter at Eclipse told us we could use their cabanas or loungers provided we bought two drinks. We thought it wasn't a bad deal and went with it.
"As we got settled in, he kept on pestering us to order to which my wife got a mojito while I got a beer. I kept on asking for a price and he cleverly avoided the question by saying he needs to get the drinks menu but it is cheap so please order. In the process he forced us to order milkshakes for our kids.
"As we're sitting there for about an hour, we thought we might as well order some food which he recommended some calamari and on the menu it said €19. He said it comes with a side salad and bread which I again asked is it a separate charge which he said 'No'.
"In the end he handed me a paper with two lines which I asked clarification he said was food and drinks. I was already shocked at seeing 75 for the Calamari and 78 for the drinks but to get it over with he kept on pestering for payment and I gave my credit card.
'My hubby wants to name our baby after his mum but her beliefs are too extreme'
"When the bill came back I was appalled as the Calamari was €148, the milkshakes which we never wanted but were forced to order for our kids were €38 each and the salad and bread which we were told were free were €28 and 14.50 respectively."
