Kate Garraway's GMB co-star shares special way ITV will support her comeback

Good Morning Britain star Richard Arnold has explained how he and his colleagues are going to support Kate Garraway as she makes her return to the ITV show on Thursday.

The TV and radio presenter, 56, stepped away from work at the end of last year to spend time with her beloved husband Derek Draper. He had been suffering from long term coronavirus complications after contracting it back in 2020. Derek tragically suffered a heart attack at the end of last year, and passed away last month aged 56 with Kate sharing a heartbreaking statement.

Mum-of-two Kate made an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Monday morning, where she spoke about her late husband following his funeral last week. Kate confirmed she will return to the desk on the ITV morning show on Thursday and joked: “I’m going to be looking forward to a blow dry.”

She said she will also be cracking out the fake eyelashes and fake tan, adding: “Don’t worry – I am going to be looking a lot more respectable.” She went on: “I am looking forward to coming into the world and connecting with everyone again. Thank you for having me back but have a little patience, I might be a bit rusty. I think there is a new king. Have I caught up with that?”

Kate took an extended leave whilst Derek was ill and when he passed so she could be with their children Darcey and Billy. In the chat yesterday morning, Kate defended her return to work just days after Derek's funeral. She said: “A new life starts now. I don’t quite know how it’s going to be, but grief isn’t containable is it? Some people say, ‘Why [are] you going back to work?’ Well, everybody does have to, don’t they? Life has to start any minute now.”

Now, fellow Good Morning Britain star Richard has shared how he and his ITV colleagues will be there to help Kate settle back into her role. "I know there'll be a huge warm welcome for her when she gets back. You know, obviously it's a very poignant time, very personal time for the team as well," he told The Sun.

Richard went on to praise Kate for her outstanding bravery in the face of her grief and the immense struggles her family have been through since 2020. “Like so many people in her position she's demonstrated such courage and such humanity and I know the viewers relate to that, too. I mean anyone, who has been a carer, unsung or otherwise, you've got to dig deep.

“I know she draws an awful lot of that strength, not just from her pals here at GMB both on the screen and behind the scenes, but also the outpouring of support she's had over the last few years from the viewers. It’s been an extraordinary amount of support for her which is wonderful. And I do know that she draws an awful lot of strength from that, the whole family does," Richard added. Richard is an Ambassador for , a national bereavement and palliative care charity.

Derek's funeral was held last week, with a number of her Good Morning Britain colleagues in attendance. Sir Elton John also attended the funeral, whilst daughter Darcey was pictured holding the coffin in emotional photos from the funeral. Kate has opened up about her daughter's final conversation with Derek as she became close to tears.

She revealed what Darcey had said to her father: "Dad if you can't do this we’ll be ok - release yourself. You don't need to worry about us - you don't need to worry about mum. We'll all be okay." Kate shared how the support from her friends and viewers had "made her weep" following Derek's death.
