Premier League sack race as Palace consider Hodgson exit and Chelsea in crisis

Managerial upheaval has been at a premium in the Premier League so far this season - but that could all be about to change.

Only two top-flight coaches have lost their jobs this season; Paul Heckingbottom at Sheffield United, while Steve Cooper was also sacked by Nottingham Forest. Jurgen Klopp made it three by announcing his decision to depart Liverpool but he could still leave as a Premier League champion for the second time.

Following the latest round of top-flight fixtures, pressure has grown on a select few managers. They could potentially pay with their jobs should they not manage to turn things around sooner rather than later. Take a look at the latest on who could be the next Premier League manager to be jettisoned:

Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea

Much like Graham Potter before him, it really hasn’t worked out for Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea. Despite their appetite for high-spending, the Blues have been absolutely rotten this season.

Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves at Stamford Bridge - the Black Country’s side first win in West London since 1979 - has left Pochettino with plenty of questions to answer. Matheus Cunha bagged a hat-trick to condemn Chelsea to their tenth league reverse of the season.

Fans’ patience appears to have snapped with the Blues loudly booed come the final whistle, while Pochettino also apologised to supporters in his post-match interview. He only penned a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge so it would not be a surprise to see Todd Boehly pull the trigger should fortunes not improve at Chelsea.

Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace

Staying in the capital, Crystal Palace are in dire straits under Roy Hodgson. He is in his second spell as the Eagles’ manager and it has so far turned into a nightmare.

Their 4-1 thumping at the hands of rivals Brighton is their third in their last four games. Fans have been left furious and have staged protests both during and after their defeat at Arsenal last month, while supporters also protested against the club’s ownership at the weekend.

While Palace are still some distance away from the relegation zone - with five points and four places separating them and Everton - the club are in freefall and the situation simply cannot continue. Reports have already claimed that Steve Parish is considering doing away with Hodgson’s services but a lack of suitable replacements has seen him given a stay of execution.

Chris Wilder, Sheffield United

Chris Wilder was given a hero's welcome amid his return to Bramall Lane to replace Heckingbottom. It has not gone the way the Blades or Wilder will have envisioned.

He has overseen just a solitary Premier League victory - a 1-0 win against Brentford back in December. Since then, Sheffield United have claimed just two further points.

Their latest disappointing result came in the form of a 5-0 reverse at the hands of Aston Villa on home soil. Fans started leaving once Villa’s third goal found the back of the net and while Wilder would have more credit in the bank than most managers, he really has to get the Blades back on track if he wants to avoid the fate of becoming the second Sheffield United manager to be sacked this season.

Vincent Kompany, Burnley

From one promoted club to another, Burnley look likely to return to the Championship at the first time of asking, just like Sheffield United. The Clarets have so far retained faith in Vincent Kompany.

However, results have simply not been good enough. While Burnley battled back to draw 2-2 with Fulham at the weekend, the stalemate extended their winless run to six games.

Since returning to the top flight, the Clarets have lost 18 matches in all competitions. Things are not getting any easier, either, with upcoming games against Liverpool and Arsenal ahead of what looks like a key clash with Crystal Palace. Another three reverses could potentially see Kompany jettisoned.
