Kate Garraway said she had "regrets" as she returned to Good Morning Britain following Derek Draper's death.

The broadcaster took an extended period of leave from the ITV morning programme after the late political lobbyist went into cardiac arrest over the Christmas period. But just days after his funeral, Kate appeared on the programme via video link ahead of her full-time return to the show later this week.

Kate, 56, was overcome as she revealed how she wished she was caring for Derek today. The late psychologist died in January, four years after contracting coronavirus which saw his health tragically decline.

Speaking to co-anchors Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid, while choking up, Kate said: "I think the people watching, they will know two things that are in a caring position – how unbelievably hard it is but what an honour it is too. And how much I wish I was caring today because it's you know, it's an incredible thing to be that line of defence against the world and what happens to us all in life.

"To be able to be that person there for somebody, it's the ultimate honour and privilege, isn't it? I know I didn't get it all right and I have lots of regrets of things I should have done more of and spent less time fretting about but it is a huge honour and what you do will be something that builds your forever, it's a gift but also you get so much for it as well."

But she added: "Sorry, that's very depressing. I don't mean to depress everybody on a Monday morning but you know what I mean." Despite Kate apologising for being "depressing", Richard interjected stating that she had no need to apologise and that it was an "honour" to discuss Derek.

Kate returns to Good Morning Britain on Thursday and while laughing she explained she was looking forward to a good blow-dry and wearing fake eyelashes. "I'm looking forward to applying fake tan, don't worry I'll be a little bit more respectable on Thursday, I'll be doing a lot of homework between now and then because I feel like I've been in a very small bubble.

"I look forward really to coming into the world and sharing what's going on for everybody else and connecting with everyone again." But she later joked: "Have a little bit of patience, I might be a little bit rusty, there's a new King isn't there?" she laughed.

During her interview, Kate went on to reveal that King Charles and Princess Catherine had written letters of support to her, while saying that David and Victoria Beckham had also gotten in touch with her and her family. During her chat, Kate opened up about the moment when she and her family were informed that Derek's health had reached a point, which he sadly wouldn't return from.

"It was one of those 'stop the clock' moments, where you want the world to stop," she said, before going on to add: "And I think the vacuum you feel at that point, having been entirely focused for four years on: what do I need to do next? What can I do for Derek, what's happening with the children? All of that, it swamps you.

"Thinking: right, we have what we were told was 24 hours, and turned out to be more than a month of him fighting on and fighting on even though the prognosis was, this is one he won't make through. And that's a challenge, because for the children, when they heard the doctors say he won’t survive this, they’ve heard that so many times.

"We knew Derek could still hear even though he couldn’t open his eyes, so it was a challenge to make sure he knew that he wasn't letting us down, because he couldn't get through this last one." But while some have questioned Kate's decision to return to work less than a week after his funeral, she had her reasoning.

"A new life starts now. I don't quite know how it's gonna be. But grief isn't containable in a day or a month or a year," she said before explaining: "I think some people say: 'Why are you going back to work? Well, everybody does have to, don't they? Life has to start." But it's not just Kate returning to everyday life, she joked that her son Billy was returning to school "In fact, he's late actually. Bill's going to have to go to school - in fact, somebody better tell him to hurry up [or] I'll be in trouble with the teachers," she commented.
