A woman who had been looking forward to a European city break with a friend says she's now been left in the lurch for a reason she simply can't comprehend.

Plenty of thought had gone into planning their holiday. After discussing various options, the two women finally decided on Barcelona, a place neither of them had ever been to. A vibrant city filled with culture, Barcelona boasts various architectural wonders, including the awe-inspiring La Sagrada Familia.

Designed by the great Antoni Gaudí, work began on the church way back in 1852, and it remains incomplete to this day, the various shifting influences of its construction adding to its unique legacy. After mentioning this interesting fact to her pal, however, the now baffled woman received an unexpected, and rather frustrating, response.

Taking to Mumsnet, the perplexed culture lover wrote: "In conversation, I mentioned that it seemed crazy to us, living in 2024, that it had taken 140 years to complete and still wasn't quite built, but in the past, this was the norm for cathedrals. My friend was more silent for the rest of the conversation and today she asked if we could actually rebook for somewhere else as she didn't fancy going to a 'building site' on her holiday (she particularly likes to visit cathedrals wherever she goes)."

Reaching out for advice, she continued: "Wtf? I've tried to explain to her that it won't be like the quarry of the HS2 extension there, but she is insistent that she only sees a cathedral in 'all its glory'. I'm so frustrated with her (given flights are already booked) that quite frankly I'm going to cancel."

She went on to clarify that her friend now wants to back out of their holiday altogether, and instead wants to swap their planned destination for another city with a finished cathedral she can 'tick off'.

A number of those in the comments section just couldn't understand why anyone could take issue with such a 'breathtakingly beautiful' building, with some urging her to visit alone if her picky travelling companion couldn't be convinced.

One person advised: "Going to a cathedral is not the whole trip. If she doesn't want to see it, then still go to Barcelona, but see other sites. Or you can go on your own and meet up with her later."

Another suggested: "How bizarre. It's not like you're actually staying in the cathedral is it! Just visiting (and you should, it is incredible). I'd ignore her nonsense. go on the trip and to La Sagrada Familia anyway with or without her."

A third recommended: "You could point out to her there are other magnificent cathedrals in Barcelona. There is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and St Eulalia; there is Santa Maria del Mar, both built in medieval times."
