Another potentially dangerous weight loss 'hack' has made its way back into the mainstream.

It was only a decade ago when social media sites like Tumblr were infested with strange concoctions that promised to leave you waking up with a flat stomach, perfect skin, and a new pack of abs. Spearheaded by celebs, these 'detox' or 'cleansing' drinks have been around since the 40s - and always manage to claw there way back.

In 2017, Beyonce claimed she lost 20 pounds by consuming nothing but a 'master cleanse drink' for 10 days, consisting of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and purified water. Now, this gut-wrenching potion has been slightly adjusted and branded as the 'skinny girl shot'.

TikTok users are hailing the recipe which they say will leave you 'snatched' - a term likely appropriated from Black drag queens in the 90s. The recipe: A jug of water with the juice of one lemon, two teaspoons of cayenne pepper, two teaspoons of turmeric, a teaspoon of honey, a sprinkle of black pepper and a dash of apple cider vinegar. Sound familiar?

Michael Mosley - creator of the Fast 800 diet - tried making the drink as part of the Channel 4 show Michael Mosley: Secrets of Your Big Shop. His reaction was nothing short of hilarious, and will perhaps put you off making the 'shot' at home.

"This whole concoction is presumably utterly vile so you put in some honey to sweeten it," he said - before pointing out it 'will certainly have no effect whatsoever on your weight'. "That is astonishingly bitter with an incredible after burn," he added.

"I feel like I've just drunk acid...I can only assume that you might burn off some calories by running, screaming around the house after having drunk this stuff."

Registered dietitian Abbey Sharp has amassed over 776,000 TikTok followers for debunking popular diet trends - and she also wasn't a fan of the 'skinny girl shot'. In fact, the expert warned her viewers to not try the concoction 'ever' -adding: "Do you want to s*** yourself all day? Or dissolve the teeth right out of your mouth? Because that's the most likely outcome of a drink like this.

Sharp said that certain elements of the drink are associated with a slew of health benefits, but it's not that simple. "While apple cider vinegar has been shown to help reduce glycaemic response, reduce appetite, and therefore help to support weight loss - it's also been suggested that one of the ways it helps reduce your appetite is by making you fee so nauseous that you don't actually want to eat," she added.
