Lord Sugar fires first The Apprentice contestant after team makes massive loss
Lord Sugar has made his first firing already, leaving one contestant sent packing.
The Apprentice returned for its 18th series on Thursday night as Lord Sugar welcomed fresh contenders into the boardroom for the first time. In the first episode, the 18 contestants were split into teams of boys and girls as they battled it out to secure Lord Sugar's £250,000 investment. They were sent to the Scottish Highlands and tasked with putting on high-end away days for corporate clients.
The female team’s hope of impressing bigwigs from the hospitality industry crumbled when they gave fishcakes a sweet, instead of savoury coating. Then for dessert they served an apple crumble raw because they microwaved it instead of baking it in an oven. Lord Sugar's aide Karren Brady branded it "the worst food I have ever seen.”
Tim Campbell was sent to watch over the male team and was left horrified as they served water as a welcome drink instead of an alcoholic tipple. Yet in the end it was the girls team who managed to impress, leaving the boys at risk of being fired after they made a huge loss of minus £500.
Virdi Singh Mazaria was the project manager and called back Oliver Medforth and Steve Darken. They all tried to fight to keep their place in the competition, however Lord Sugar had enough and delivered his verdict. He decided to keep Steve in the competition, and said: "It is difficult, Virdi it is quiet regretful that we lost money. It's a tough one but Olly I am sorry to say mate but you are fired."
EastEnders' Jake Wood's snap of son has fans pointing out the pair's likenessLord Sugar added: "That was very very tough that was because he is a nice bloke." Pointing to Virdi he said: "You are staying here because you had the balls to take on the task which I like."
Speaking to the Mirror, Karren opened up the first task. She said: “Sometimes you just can't believe your eyes, you just can’t believe how chaotic it is and how unnecessarily unorganised it is. You can't catch your breath and you sit there and you're thinking, ‘Am I really seeing this? Is this really happening?’ It was the worst tasting food I'd ever have. Sometimes it doesn't look pretty but actually it tastes quite good.
"This looked okay, but tasted terrible. [The mistake] was so self-inflicted. And it's so frustrating, because a little bit more organisation and it would have been so much better."
Tim added: "We care about the candidates doing the best that they can and if something's going catastrophically wrong, both Karen and I have said, ‘Have you thought about this?’ Just to give them an indication, but our role is to be in the background, to let them get on and then see how they perform. But sometimes our faces tell that story in much better ways than anything."
However, it appears viewers shouldn't be put off by the talent shown on the first week. Ahead of the show's return, Lord Sugar said: “It gets stronger and stronger.” He also claimed: “It inspires viewers... young people in particular.”
